Sorry I am not particular with these forums so I apologize if I'm posting this in the wrong place.

So I recently got accepted into ASU & applied for nursing as my 1st choice and communications as my 2nd choice. I applied with those two majors in hopes to double major in them. I know they are two completely different majors but I am rather ambitious to try different and difficult things.

I am an average A-B student, loaded with many lab sciences, and have fair test scores. My scores don't really reflect my academic ability because I am a poor test taker. I also rank above the 25 percentile of my class.

So my problem is I got accepted through my 2nd major of communications but as I have said I wanted to double major. But since nursing is such a rigorous course I don't know if there are hopes for me to even get in even though I'm an incoming freshman.

Should I even bother contacting admissions to tell them about my situation or should I not and avoid making myself look like a fool? I understand you don't have to commit till your sophomore year but since they are completely different courses I want to keep on track from the beginning.

I’m not sure if there’s much help that people on this forum could give you, since not many people are in the same boat as you are. I don’t think it would hurt to write a carefully written email to admissions explaining your situation. It sounds like it would be better for you to write a well thought-out email than to do nothing.

If a double-major is what you want to do, go ahead and try it. Though hard, it is absolutely possible. I would call their office and see what can be done for you to reach your goal. Nobody’s gonna think you’re a fool; stop caring about what others might think of you.

Thank you for you input and I will take both into consideration. I am meeting with my counselor on Monday and I’ll see what I should do regarding this situation. I wasn’t excepting someone on the same boat but I appreciate your efforts to help me.

I don’t know any specifics about ASU, but quickly looked at their website and saw two issues for you to consider. 1) Nursing and Communications are offered at different campuses. Will it be possible for you take the classes you need in both programs while shuttling between the two. 2) Look up the Major Maps for the two programs (on the website). There are relatively few overlapping requirements which means to complete both majors you would need to take many more classes than are required for either program alone.

HS students often think they want to double major, but when they get to college they realize that it is not realistic. It is great to have an intellectual curiosity about multiple fields and it is normal to not have a clear idea of your preference until you have taken some classes in college. That’s part of the purpose of your freshman year. If you are confident that you want to go into nursing, then perhaps your best option is to focus on that as a major and possibly add communications as a minor. If, during to course of taking nursing classes, you decide that nursing is not for you, then you can change your communications minor to a major (but it may cause you to take more than four years to graduate). Good luck.
