Her “You’re In” envelope included the letter and a separate paper with her scholarship information on it. Just the IU Distinction automatic scholarship was mentioned. Nothing about applying to SSA or HHC. We’ll see if the manila envelope arrives. I wonder if she should inquire about the SSA in the meantime.

2leashes:…do not despair. FYI…I don’t know that HHC has specific “stats” which qualify one for admittance, but I’m guessing most kids who get the $9,000 year do get invited (hopefully she’ll receive her “Achieve” scarf soon!..they’ve already mailed them out, so…I don’t know their procedure, but…hopefully).

My D got an e-mail first. I can’t remember what it said.

Then she got the “You’re In” package in the mail. That DID speak to her automatic scholarships, and an offer to apply for SSA. In describing SSA it said that any HHC scholarships would come from this application too. But it did NOT invite her to HHC.

About 1-2 weeks AFTER this…she received a SEPARATE (manilla?) envelope inviting her to HHC. You won’t be able to confuse it, it’s very specific, and includes a post card to mail back by 5/1 if you decide to accept the offer to join HHC.

I’m sure the difference in timing of receiving it just has to do with the level of “busy” at IU. FIRST they process your app, then send it onward to HHC for their processing if applicable. So, if they’re not busy, this could happen quickly (the poster who got theirs on the same day). But, at this time of year it might be delayed a bit.

I just talked with Ms. Baker at IU HHC (VERY pleasant woman) and she told me the new criteria for HHC and SSA is an ACT score of 31. Dang! Daughter missed it by one point! But Ms. Baker also mentioned the GPA of which my D has a 4.15. But, as of now she’s in the top 6%. It looks like it has to be top 5% to be eligible. Ms. Baker said she can petition it, though, or even apply after a semester at IU if she keeps her GPA up. That might be the way to go. She can meet kids who are in HHC and get their feedback.

As for the SSA, even though she’s taking the ACT again next Saturday, Ms. Baker said it would be too late to get those scores in. The cut-off date is Dec. 19, she said. Oh, well. She can apply for outside scholarships. Unfortunately, she may not be able to attend if she doesn’t “find” some more merit aid. We can handle paying $25,000 my husband told me. Barely. When I add up all the costs they listed it’s close to $40,000. And, that was for LAST year. :: Gulp. ::

Well, at least we have the information and won’t be waiting for an another letter. I asked her why IU doesn’t post the stats criteria and she agreed it would make her job easier. Evidently the provost doesn’t want kids who might want to petition to become discouraged. She said something else about having to turn kids down, as well.

2Leashes: Will you please clarify something for me? In post #81 you said your D was invited to apply for SSA. Later she received the honors college info. In post #84 you said that the new criteria for HHC and SSA is an ACT of 31 and that your D missed it by one point. I’m confused. My D has only gotten the acceptance email and the scarf, nothing else. I’m just wondering what else she should expect, if anything. Thanks.

I looked at #81 again and I think you must have read the post I was QUOTING from
R124687. I commented about my daughter right above it.

I had said nothing was mentioned about applying to SSA or HHC. Only the IU Automatic Scholarship. And, this was before I was told that the requirements had gone up. Ms. Baker told me this over the phone when I called. So, now I’ll know not to wait for anything else. If her ACT score increases on the 12th, we’ll send it in for consideration for HHC. But, it’s too late for SSA, I was told. Did your daughter have the required test scores and GPA? If so, I would hope they would invite her. Wait–you didn’t mention the Automatic Scholarship. She should have received that in the same acceptance envelope. If so, you would think they would list the SSA. Not sure about HHC or if that’s separate.

I had posted in #81:

^Thanks 2Leashes. As of yesterday my D had only received an acceptance email and a scarf. She got the “You’re In” envelope today. That has the Automatic Scholarship info and SSA info but nothing about HHC. We’ll see if she gets that later. Thanks again.

If she has the required stats, I would hope they’ll notify her soon. I think HHC information comes from a different place. When I spoke to Ms. Baker, she mentioned that the SSA and HHC were not one and the same. So I bet your daughter will receive the invitation soon. Someone else here said she got hers in a separate envelope. Best wishes!

im an intl student who met the SAT requirement for scholarships but i never received any email or letter regarding automatic or selective scholarships though i received my acceptance letter today… should i call???

Bummer, 2Leashes, about your daughter barely missing the two criteria for admission to HHC this year. These criteria not being published in advance has been a major complaint of mine (read my past posts on HHC and you’ll see this to be true.) But, at least your daughter can still apply for SSA financial merit aid. Hopefully, this will mean that she can still be admitted later to the honors college if she decides to attend and can afford IU-B.

P.S. My own son missed the 3.60 criteria for Indiana University freshmen applying for HHC admission during the sophomore year when he received a 3.59 GPA during his first year at the school, so I can understand your frustration at having your child just miss the cutoff. (At that time, there were no petitions allowed. Now the school requires a 3.7 GPA during the freshmen year, but petitioning is allowed–both for entering freshmen, and for already admitted freshmen trying to get in during the sophomore year.)

You should call admissions office about the scholarship at 812-855-0661 or 812-855-4306 (number for international students) and ask about the automatic scholarship.

Call Jill Baker at 812 855-3555 (e-mail: babaker@indiana.edu) about getting into Hutton.

Maybe since you are an international student somebody did not complete the steps correctly for you to get the automatic scholarship and the HHC invitation. You should be able to clear it up over the telephone.

Well, she doesn’t seem to be shedding too many tears at this point. And, actually Ms. Baker in HHC told me that it will be too late to apply for the SSA merit aid, even if she took the ACT again Saturday and the score increases. But she did say it was possible to petition HHC with a higher score or just with the stats she now has. We’ll see! But, yeah, it’s frustrating to miss it by one point.

ilovehf–What that means is that you will enter as a University Division student. The vast majority of freshman are University Division. It simply means that you have not officially been admitted to your school or your major. You’ve been admitted to IU. For some schools, for example Kelley and Informatics, what you need to do for admission is pretty clear. For the College of Arts and Sciences and it’s majors, it’s a less so because most students graduate from COAS. Sometime after your freshman year, depending upon your major/school, you will seek official admission in your school. It doesn’t mean you can’t take classes in your major or school, or other schools, before admission. I know in the COAS, at least 90 percent of freshman are University Division. This figure will vary from school to school, but again, the majority of freshman are University Division. Nothing to worry about.

Also an FYI–D’s plan also said Exploratory, but she is a student in the HHC. HHC students can also be considered University Division. It really just means she’s not completed the credits/prerequisites to declare a school and major.
