I haven't gotten anything yet, but I suppose I should expect it tomorrow since I live in Georgia. I'm a bit worried...but I got into Duke which has like a 19% acceptance rate this year so I'll keep my fingers crossed

I was waitlisted. I got into Dartmouth with amazing financial aid, though, so I'm not too bothered by it. (Still too scared to check Princeton.)

i am officially the master of the waitlist.

i didn't get anything yet and live in northern california. does this mean i'm rejected =(

realestate:

No. It means they mailed the letters from Philadelphia on Tuesday and it takes more that two days for the mail to get to California!

To those who got an acceptance: Congratulations.

To those who got waitlisted: Darn! The good news is that I'm sure all of you got some fantastic acceptances.

thats wierd...I'm international and I haven't recieved an email or anything of that sort

im on the waitlist train as well! does anyone kno the chances of getting off the waitlist? (last year's stats?)

The 2006-2007 CDS http://www.swarthmore.edu/Admin/institutional_research/cds2006.pdf shows 26 admitted from the waiting list last year. 18 were admitted from the waiting list the previous year.

I know that you probably don't want to know.

If you are still interested in Swarthmore, stay on the list...but make your plans and get excited about your other great options based on the assumption that it won't happen. If you get a phone call out of the blue, great.

Most of the waitlist movement will happen right at the end of April/early May....with maybe a few offers after that.

They've enrolled 26 and 18 students from the wait list the last two years. It fluctuates from single-digits to a high of 50 over the last ten years.

to other waitlistees -- i doubt i'll be taking my spot on it. i realize that does virtually nothing in terms of increasing your chances, but anything counts, i guess?

wow thanks for the info! it's just that swat is my dream school and it really breaks my heart! the waitlist letter was actually pretty nice. but wow the shots are pretty slim. =/
thanks cameliasinensis for the comforting information, two other people in my school were admitted as well and they will not be going to swat becos of better offers from other institutions. maybe there is hope....

one of my best friends got into brown today after being rejected by swarthmore early decision, even though swarthmore was her first choice by far and probably a better fit for her personality. it's really bizarre.

ok guys, if you're international, do you get e-mailed first? any internationals get their packets yet?

babycakes:

I haven't seen any internationals who have heard a decision yet. I'm guessing that the international e-mails will go out tomorrow.

The US letters were mailed on Tuesday, so that most of the country would receive them by tomorrow.

Not bizzare. It's just a numbers game. The very small size and the highly self-selected applicant pool make Swarthmore very difficult to get into. Look at the great schools you guys waitlisted at Swat are getting into. It's not like Dartmouth and Brown and Duke are chopped liver, ya know!

Less than half of Swarthmore's acceptance letters go to white US applicants. So, if you are in that group, figure about 425 acceptance letters total. Subtract out the recruited athletes. The legacies. The early decisions. Then, start dividing up the remaining pile: some engineers, some linguists, some theater geeks, some musicians, some community service junkies, some math geniuses. Figure guys have a little better edge than girls. See where this is leading? Whatever "slot" each of you fit into in the admissions office was a very small pile.

I know that nobody wants to hear it, but you can't take it personally. Seriously. You guys are all great applicants. It's Swarthmore's loss. Follow CC for a while and you'll see that last year's disappointed applicants are happy as a clam at Darmouth or Haverford or Oberlin or Brown or wherever.

thanks interesteddad, do internationals get mailed packages by usps? or dhl? and when? do u know when they got sent out? i would think waitlist/rejection letters get mailed later?

The following quotation is from today's Daily Gazette. the Swarthmore online newspaper. So, anyone questioning why someone would not be accepted at Swat and might get into Brown, Yale, etc., again, it's all about the "fit." The fit for the school and the fit for the applicant. Swat is highly self-selective and highly selective.

"Swarthmore received 5,244 applications for admission to the Class of 2011 and admitted 890 students in all for an acceptance rate of seventeen percent. The number of applications represents an eight percent increase over last year and a forty percent increase over three years ago. According to Dean of Admissions Jim Bock '90, "this is the most selective admitted class in history."

152 students were admitted in the two Early Decision rounds and 738 were admitted during Regular Decision. Bock expects these acceptances to yield a class of about 365 for next fall. The yield for the Class of 2010 was about forty percent between Early and Regular Decision, and "we took about twenty students off the waitlist." This year over 900 students were offered a spot on the waitlist."

I am an international myself and I am told that packages have been sent by DHL already.

Here's the link to the admissions article in today Daily Gazette that momof3sons referenced:

To highlight the numbers: Of the 890 total acceptance letters:

53% went to US students of color (22% Asian Am, 15% Latino/a, 15% Af Am, 1% Native American)

41% went to US caucasian students

6% went to international students

Nothing yet (although today's mail is still not here) I am in IL.

D's letter came today in CA. So, basically if it doesn't say "This is the fat one" on the back, it's a no? She won't be home for a while and I'm just wondering.
