My waitlist letter was a nondescript thin white envelope the size of half a sheet of [letter] paper with a single page inside it. I'm not sure what the acceptance letter looks like.

D's letter came today in CA. So, basically if it doesn't say "This is the fat one" on the back, it's a no?

Probably. But, the "This is the fat one" envelops are not absolutely universal.

Looks like your D has some great acceptances already in hand.

Mine came in the mail today as well.....ACCEPTED!! (yes, it says "this is the big one" or something like that on the back....and it is a large envelope)
All of my schools have now "reported in"....now it's decision time for me ;-)

Congratulations brn2bld.

You do have decision time. Swarthmore, MIT, or the free ride at Olin.

You've got to do some soul-searching on the issue of engineering school (and engineering student body) versus broad-based school (and broad-based sudent body). Kind of a nice choice to have.

Waitlisted. I'm pretty upset because Swarthmore was my first choice and the only school that truly resonated with me. I thought my application reflected that, but knowing that the competition was tough makes me feel (a little) better. I'm opting for the waitlist but moving on. On the bright side, I'm considering Duke, Haverford, and McGill, and have a few more decisions coming in.

Good luck to all who are waiting for decisions.

i am waitlisted. swarthmore was my last chance at a private school. i was also waitlisted at johns hopkins, rejected by pomona and cornell. i just hope for a miracle. i sincerely do not want to go to a UC. =(

i got waitlisted. Swarthmore was my second choice and I'd decided where I wanted to go anyway

Just got the mail....ACCEPTED. I live in So. California. The evelope is a big one (but light weight)-- has a folder inside.

A nightmare...

On the 24th, I got a letter from a current student congratulating me of my acceptance and an invite to Ride the Tide.

Today I got the mail saying I was rejected. Can it possibly be a mistake? Shall I call in to make sure?

This feeling... is killing me.

Wow, akor, I can't imagine how you're feeling right now. Definately call them, there had to be a mistake one way (the first letter) or the other (the second letter). I know we're all hoping for the latest letter to be wrong. Good luck.

Interesteddad - thanks for the kind words. My D was waitlisted, and is still going to go visit in a few weeks on a pre-planned trip. But yes, she does have other nice options, so she feels quite fortunate.

aKor:

That is a nightmare. What a major screw up, one way or another.

I definitely would contact Jim Bock, the Dean of Admissions, personally. He's going to get involved in a screw up of that proportion, sooner or later, so might as well make it sooner.

Just thinking out loud, what I might do is write an e-mail directly to Bock -- you can find his e-mail addy on the website. I would probably take the position of just being bewildered by the two letters (shouldn't be too hard to fake that, huh?). Explain your excitement at receiving the first letter (assuming that was the case) and the kick in the gut receiving the second letter. Nice, simple, short e-mail, ending with a question: am I accepted or rejected? Trust me, he is going to be really upset at the screw up.

I would probably tell him in the e-mail that you are faxing copies of both letters and then send a printed copy of the e mail with both letters to his attention.

Ask when it would be a good time for you to call him to figure out what happened. Include your number, because it wouldn't surprise me if he calls you.

I would do this tomorrow and get the ball rolling.

Good luck. That bites.

Much thanks for the advice

akor, I am really sorry for what happened to you. I would like to know how to make you feel better ..
Could you please let us know the outcome?
Btw, I am still waiting for Swarthmore's decision :-s

i'm still waiting....Hopefully I'll get it today

any intl student gotten a letter yet?

aKor, just to let you know, I'm rooting for you. I believe that if you explain the situation carefully and let them know Swarthmore is your top choice (assuming it is) and you did get a likely letter, there should have to admit you no matter what. :D

aKor,
What happened to you is really unfortunate and wrong, and I will not be surprised if you will end up being accepted as a result, even if the early write was a mistake...

That said, based on some of your responses on other threads, I am not sure that Swarthmore is the right place for you. You have several excellent options. Choose one with the best fit.

aKor, unfortunately, if the first letter you got was from a current Swarthmore student, that was not an early write, which was a letter from the admissions office signed by James L. Bock, Dean of Admission.

accepted...

but I think ill be going to dartmouth instead

does anyone know when will the international emails come?
