Admission notification for American students

The notification period is between January 24th and March 26th. If I applied in October, should I expect to hear from them in January, or does it not matter how early I applied? Thanks.

The decisions seem to come out randomly. Applicants who are way above the minimum cutoffs appear to hear back earlier. At least that is what I noticed in looking at the decision threads the last couple of years.

Thanks @tomofboston You seem to be quite well informed about the process at McGill. I noticed on the class of 2018 thread that you said decisions for US students had started coming out in early February last year, but I didn’t see any admitted students’ posts before that time. McGill’s web page seems to indicate they’ll start sending out decisions January 24th… Any chance of earlier notification?

In the McGill online chat last week, admissions said we could hear back as early as mid-January. However, that date is largely dependent on when they receive your official 12th grade interims. So, she said if they get your complete file way before then, including self-reported grades, then they already know if they’re going to accept or deny and they just wait for the official transcript supplement to make it official. She also repeated many times the emphasis on the senior year, the fact that any hs classes completed in 8th grade and on the transcript would not be factored into the GPA. She didn’t say explicitly that GPA will be recalculated only with 11 and 12 and maybe 10th, but that 12th was the tipping factor.

Thanks everyone. I’ve heard that GPA is a huge factor in admissions, but do they consider the difficulty of courses too?

@‌leyland I’m confused. The website says that students are only supposed to upload unofficial transcripts; they’re not supposed to send official transcripts until they’re admitted. Your post seemed to suggest that they wouldn’t admit students without the official transcript??

Here’s the link: http://www.mcgill.ca/applying/admissionsguide/2015-16/general-requirements#transcripts

Okay, I think I’ve figured out why I’ve confused you: “Official” to me means that it is sent directly from my school to McGill. There is an official interim and an official final transcript. So, for instance, in my case, I upload my first quarter grades of 12th grade – unofficial because they didn’t come from my school, they are not final, and because they are not yet reported on my transcript. Then, in January, we will have the official 1st semester grades that our school automatically sends to every school we’ve applied to. Those are the grades by which they will make the conditional decision. Then, at the end of the year, the official final transcript (with all four years of high school and final calculated GPA) will be sent to McGill directly from the school. I can see how it is open to interpretation, but I’m not going to take any chances.

I was accepted in June of last year. My friend who is in her last year of High School was rejected two days ago. SO I would assume being “overqualified/well qualified” doesn’t have much to do with the process.

If your high school uses trimesters, will McGill wait for winter tri grades?

I have a similar question regarding transcripts. The one I have to upload is unofficial. McGill says that they want a school stamp and counselor contact on the transcript. The unofficial one from my counselor does not include this, only an official one (which is printed) has this. But mcgill doesn’t want mailing… What do I do?

Also, does mcgill require ALL act scores? I took it more than once, so will they use my best score or could they reject me if my first one was below admin minima?

ok so I applied like in october…but I applied for the agriculture faculty as my first choice and science as my second choice. however, now I would like to change them (science first, agri second). is there anyway I can do this? Or am i stuck with this.
the mcgill office is closed for holidays so i can’t call and i am freaking out!

@mkscience are you an american student. if so, isn’t june kind of late. i mean considering the fact that for most american universities you have to submit a deposit before than?

@ivyhopefulebound‌ McGill will consider all of your applications to different faculties and give you separate decisions for each one of them. Thus it doesn’t really matter which one was your first choice, you will receive an independent decision on each one of your faculty applications.

@upapilot so I will have a decision from both faculties regardless? is attire that if you make the bare cutoffs you are in?

Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee acceptance.

@ivyhopefulebound‌ Technically speaking they are minimum requirements not “cutoffs”, so it’s still possible to get rejected even after meeting the minimums. However if you are well above the minimums, then you can be pretty certain of admission.

I just got my acceptance today; I go to a U.S. high school. Good luck to the rest of y’all

Congratulations @mtjade‌! Did you just sign in to see that your status had been changed or were you notified by email?

Thank you. I received an email titled “Admission Decision Notification” and said that a decision has been made on my MINERVA. Click on the applicant menu and select your specific terms and there will be a decision letter that you can download.

@mtjade‌, just checked again since last night and saw that my status changed to Admitted Pending Final Results, referring to graduation proof and AP scores. No email yet, but looking forward to it! Is there a thread for 2019 McGill Decisions?
