Hey people. My admission got rescinded from UCSD too. It's because they didn't receive my official transcripts. I went to school ASAP(8/9) after I learned that, and got informed that the school did not send it out because I had a financial hold from Spring'10 that NOBODY informed me about PRIOR to this.

I requested for my official transcripts on 6/30th. Got the receipt and everything. That was about 4 weeks after the end of our Spring term. Spring term ended 6/2, and I was ABLE to view my Spring term's results and register for summer classes between 6/2 - 6/30. On 6/30, I requested for my transcript and they still did not tell me anything about a hold. Thus I was under the impression that I had no holds! I then went to the office to pay for my summer classes on 6/30(right after I requested for my transcripts, I think). And still, they did not tell me that I owed them anything. The money I owed was for "Student's Activity Fee," $11. I am really mad that $11 is gonna be the reason as to why my CC decides to, OUT OF NOWHERE, ignore the importance of this task and put a hold on me almost 2 months after Spring'10.

I realized that I had a hold some time in July, and I only paid for it on 7/27 because I wanted to get IGETC certified after my summer classes and so I paid in case clearing a financial hold would be a tedious process. At this point of time I still had NO idea that they still haven't sent anything out.

Even when I went to school 8/9 to ask them about my transcripts after I got my cancellation letter(bear in mind that even at THAT point I still had no idea that they did not send them out), they STILL haven't processed it whatsoever. Not that it would've mattered even if they did process them on 7/27. But STILL? Wasn't that TERRIBLE service on their part?

Has anyone had similar experience? What're the chances of it being successful? I know when you write in an appeal it's really not beneficial for you to try and blame it on the school/someone else. But in this case I really find it hard not to. Opinions and comments welcome.

Blame it on them. How the *@#% are you supposed to know?

You know someday if you’re a high manager or the CEO of some company, you’re going to need to know how to assess blame and do damage control. It’s a thing nobody wants to do, and some will say take the higher road, but there are times when you just have to.

Thank you for your feedback, wwlink. I was trying to keep calm too when I learned from the first staff I talked to that it didn’t get sent. But their attitude was really bad too, and I can’t even get an exception to get my official transcripts earlier because they need a printed deadline. I called up UCSD and since they said there’s no deadline for appeals… I’m pretty much stuck with waiting 5-10 working days. I’m not gonna mention this in the appeal because obviously it’s irrelevant, but… yeah.

No one was apologetic and the staff just said “so what do you want me to do? what do you want me to do? well, don’t get a hold in the first place then.”

I went to the bursar’s office, where they handle holds and stuff and tried to asked them to tell me the specifics of the holds, and that lady just said checked quite reluctantly. I even told her that I needed the specifics so I can write a decent appeal letter and after a few questions about the hold she went “Well. It really doesn’t matter. That’s your fault. In your appeal just tell them ‘I owed the school money.’ It really doesn’t matter how much or why. You owed the school money.” I got more information online by looking through the records myself.

In short, they were really being some jerkfaces when I felt they were somewhat responsible for this error too.

I’d recommend explaining the circumstances, then take responsibility.

“blah blah blah, I was not informed, I didn’t know, blah blah blah… But ultimately, the responsibility for ensuring that UC received my transcripts on time was mine, and I failed to do so.”

You take responsibility, while explaining the mitigating factors.

Why don’t you ask your CC how they typically notify students that they owe money? It seems odd to me that you were not told some way either when you requested the transcripts or when they were not sent.

If you still have the receipt for the transcript request and I hope that you do and that it has some stamp or something on it–rather than just an on-line receipt, include a copy of it in your request. I also hope that you did all this requesting in person.

Anyway, with the appeal, I would send a copy of your receipt for your transcript request and say that you had no reason to think that the transcript had not been sent. You did what you were supposed to do long before the published deadline. I would also include that the hold–that you were unaware existed–was for an $11 fee. If you have receipts for paying your semester bill, you might also include that. It seems as though a fee was left off and then when it was discovered, the billing program did what it was supposed to do. Unfortunately for you, the timing really stunk. Good luck getting it straightened out.

That’s what I’m planning to do, nick. Just wondering if it would be… weird that I spend long paragraphs telling them what the school did and go “Ultimately, it was my fault.”(but I did say that)

Hi, MD Mom. Well, to be frank, I did receive a notification in the form of a letter, some time around mid-July. Really not sure when. But it was really brief, telling me I had a hold. That’s the ONLY time ever the school told me about having a hold. It’s also the only hold I’ve ever had(bummmer) in my CC life, so I don’t know how holds work(when they come into effect when you owe them money etc when and how they’re supposed to notify you etc). But it was mid-July, and Spring being something that seemed such a long time ago(and SO smooth-sailing too), I assumed that it probably involved the current summer classes that I was taking so I thought the transcript sending was unaffected(afterall, if I didn’t have a hold until mid july, they have no reason to cancel a request I made in June, right? Seemed a little too long for them to haven’t process it yet) and since it’s a hold from summer… well, that could wait, probably just an error, since I paid for my school fees already. That was what I thought to myself. And I do have the receipt, thank you.

I guess it’s kinda comforting to know that even when I settled the hold on 7/27, the transcripts were not processed even on 8/9. I didn’t get a notification that I had to go reapply or anything. So either ways, this seemed unavoidable even if I took action as soon as I got the letter.

Unless they gave me proof that something was amiss on my part (ignored mail or a changed phone number so that the college couldn’t contact me), there’s no way I’d accept blame (eg saying it was my fault), for a situation like that.

Of course, you shouldn’t show any attitude or say things like that in your appeal, but simply pointing out that you requested the transcript and they were apparently held due to a balance that you were unaware of (and they did not let you know at any time in the process), seems totally fair enough to me. From there you might want to emphasize how important it was to you and if they had (and should have) informed you of the balance you would have paid it promptly.

Thanks for the input, everyone! I’ve sent out my appeal today. Found out from a helpful staff(finally) that the hold was put on 7/12, almost 2 weeks AFTER I requested for the transcripts. Meaning I officially had NO holds(even though I owed the school money, hmm) before that. And since it was only activated on 7/12, I doubt that I received the letter informing me of the hold before the 7/15 deadline.

I really think it’s BS that they decide to cancel/not process my transcript request because of a hold put AFTER it WITHOUT any attempts to inform me directly about the transcripts at all. Got her to print out the hold activation date for me and sent it in together with the appeal. Keeping my fingers crossed!

“I’d recommend explaining the circumstances, then take responsibility.”

This. I’m in the same boat, and submitted my appeal yesterday. The only difference is that I didn’t submit a transcript from a previous university. My CC evaluated it for IGETC, and I thought that was good enough. Hopefully it turns out as well for me.

Do you still have access to the checklist? I’d really like to get a screen shot of the transcripts section.
