A question for those who have been accepted to Redlands

DS submitted his application on Nov 9th and received his log in on Nov 13th. He checked and everything was listed as submitted. In the email with his log in it said he would have a decision in 3-4 weeks

He has been checking online every week or so after the 4 weeks and finally yesterday (after over 8 weeks) it said his application had made it through an initial screening and was now with the Johnston Program admission committee. Not exact wording but close

Now finally the question. Does anyone know if this is a good sign? Does it mean that he is accepted to Redlands, but may or may not be accepted to Johnston program? Or does it not mean anything?

His top 2 choices were Redlands and LMU. He was deferred from LMU, so we are anxious about this Redlands decision. His 3rd choice is maybe Denver, where he was admitted but hasn't visited. I am trying to decide if he should go visit Denver over his long weekend at the end of the month. Flights are reasonable now but if we wait too long they will get more expensive. Or he can wait and see about Redlands and if it doesn't work out he could maybe visit Denver in March

Just a guess, but I don’t think your son’s app would move on to the Johnston program review if they weren’t going to be offering him admission to the University. I think it’s a very good sign.

Idahomom, Our daughter is currently a freshman at Redlands. She applied RD on Jan 15th and heard back on March 15th. We thought she would hear by the end of February since they state 4-5 weeks decision time. It was a loooonnnngggg wait, since it was her #1 choice.

I don’t know what it means to get moved onto Johnson, but it does sound like it could be promising. Our daughter is not a Johnston student, so I don’t know about the different criteria for acceptance into Johnston vs College of Arts and Sciences.

She loves Redlands. I hope your son gets good news. In the meantime, I would probably visit Denver if your budget allows. It might get his mind off the waiting, and you can have a mom/son outing.

Thanks for the replies-- I know that Jane and a few others had said their decisions took way longer than stated, so I guess that should be expected. I did read back through the Johnston application process-- it had been a while since I looked through-- and it said that a student must be first accepted to College of Arts and Sciences and then is considered for Johnston. They probably just wait to mail everything together-- who knows how long the Johnston people will take? Maybe it is shorter since there should be fewer applications

Someone on Denver discussion page mentioned an accepted student day later-- I might get DS to look up when that is, and then we can decide on visit

Dear Idahomom, mom of a 2008/10 so it’s been a bit. S was not a Johnston but had several Johnston friends. Fantastic program. Everyone at Redlands has always been very helpful. I’m sure they would be very glad to answer any questions if you or son call Monday. Good luck and let us know the good news when s receives admissions letter :)

Thanks LAmom! It’s good to hear your S liked the school. My S checked the status last night and now the message about the Johnston admissions committee has disappeared and it has gone back to the original message about your application is complete.

SO I am thinking maybe that means the Johnston people made their decision and admissions will be mailing something very soon. I think we will wait until Friday and if nothing comes I will have DS either call or email someone on Firday

My son didn’t apply to the Johnson Program, but he has been waiting quite a while. He sent in his application 11/15, discovered on 12/2 (after I kept nagging him to check his status) that the teacher and counselors recommendations had not been received (he contacted his gc the next day at which point they were sent). Everything is in…and it’s been about 6 weeks. He’s an athlete and did hear from the coach during that time wanting to know when he’s going to visit (which won’t be until spring break).

Another girl at his school was admitted about 5 weeks after sending in her application.

My senior applied EA, not to the Johnston program, with everything received in the office by 11/1. Called in late December right before holiday break when almost 8 weeks passed, and Admissions said they would review the application when school resumed Jan. 7. Just accepted this week with merit aid, about 10 weeks wait, but if you exclude the two weeks holiday break, about 8 working weeks. Hope this helps–maybe your son will hear in a couple of weeks? Did you see the Admitted Student Day planned for Saturday April 6?

It is good to hear that your applications took longer than the stated time as well. Based on the above, maybe DS will hear within a week or so. The Johnston step might take an extra week or so. Also good to hear your senior got merit aid. I was thinking that maybe since it was taking so long DS was borderline and had no chance at merit. So we will see

I did notice the admitted student date, but until he hears if he is accepted or not I don’t want to plan anything. I know Denvers is right around the same time, and so is U of Pacific. So DS will have to narrow down once he has all the decisions

MLM I hope your son hears from Admissions soon. My son is a junior at Redlands and an athlete. He’s having a great experience there as his team is very “tight” - that’s what he says, anyway, I think that’s a good thing ;)

Congrats to your son/daughter, momofcasenior. Redlands can be very generous with merit aid.

DS applied before 11/15 EA deadline and heard back before Christmas about admission and merit aid.

Idahomom - I’m guessing that the Johnston program is what is taking longer since the application has to go through more review. Did you call the office? Crossing my fingers for you and your son!

DS finally got his letter-- Accepted! No word on Johnston application yet but that probably comes later. As others mentioned it was a thin envelope with a one page form letter inside. If I hadn’t heard to expect that I would have definitely assumed rejection.

Thanks all! Not sure what his top choice is now-- but I think Redlands is in the top 2. I am not asking him too many questions at this point since he is still waiting on the Johnston acceptance, waiting to hear from one RD school and one school where he was deferred. Plus there is a lot of FA info to still come in

An exciting update-- DS just got a second letter in the mail today with a really nice scholarship! Definitely moves it up on my list of choices for him!
