So who here is going?

And do they provide rooms for us, or do we have to stay in a hotel for that day?

So who here is going?

And do they provide rooms for us, or do we have to stay in a hotel for that day?

If it's only one day, do you even need a hotel? Wouldn't you just show up in the morning and go home in the evening? I guess if you're from far away you'd have to find lodging, but that's probably up to you. But I don't know for sure, so contact the people who are running the admit day.

i'm from the san francisco bay area. my dad and i are driving down friday night and stopping just before LA at like 10 pm and then we're going to wake up early saturday morning to drive the rest of the way to san diego with the hopes that we won't hit major LA traffic. we haven't decided yet if we're going to stay in san diego saturday night and drive back sunday or just drive back after admit day ends. it's an 8 hour drive if you do it nonstop. i guess i better get used to it for when i bring a car down to ucsd.

i'm really excited to go down and check out muir college and all the programs they have to offer to get involved. when i toured the campus last spring, they just took us to the main spots without much actual student life insight.

to answer your question. nanday, i don't believe they provide any housing. they could probably recommend a place for you, though.

Me! I'm going and I'm stoked!

The housing... Yeah, I agree, the admissions can probably only recommend hotels and inns that you can stay at.

I think we're going to turn it into a mini family vacation. Since it's already sr. year and I don't mind missing school so much anymore, I'll be missing maaayybe the 7th and the 8th; or just the 8th. Then we can go visit the family. Or we'll take an early flight on the 9th and then fly home on the same day. Thank goodness for frequent fliers mileage.

It will be nice if you stayed in the area, though, for another day or so. just to soak up the SoCal sun... even though we'll be enjoying it well enough next schoolyear. :) oh, it's unbelievable how excited i am right now.

Hey go to www-muir.ucsd.edu and then on the left menu somewhere should tell you a bunch of hotels near UCSD. And they tell you the discount rates and all that.

there's quite a few hotels in la jolla, but i think the ones around Del Mar (like a 10-15 minute drive from UCSD) would be a little cheaper. There's a Doubletree and a Marriot...I think there's a Hampton in too.

I don't see any activities for parents and family. Does anyone know if those things exist. I know a student can sign up that they are bringing guests.

hmm do we HAVE to go?

i think i'll drop by too

No, you don't have to go, but if you do , you get to meet your future classmates

Yeah, the events and whatnot are outlined in UCSD's Admit Day website. I heard that Marshall's hosting a cultural day or something from 11-3. The purpose of Admit Day is to introduce the newbies to the campus + their parents. I guess the "activities" are the talks that we go to. At this point, as a freshman, that's all I really need: financial aid 411, tour of Marshall, see a fraction of the freshmen '05 class.

I am also going because I want a sweater. ha. hahaha

who is gonna go w/ their parents?

I am going with my mom, my dad, and my two aunts. Er, I imagine that it would be a bit embarrassing.

Sweater. YES! Want a sweater.

Dunno If I should go.........I mean...it's a 15 minute drive to UCSD...but I would have to miss work >_<

No shame in taking the parentals here! :) I'd be more than happy to introduce them to the UCSD campus. They're the ones who will be paying for me to go there, after all.

Aww, hurricane! Go anyway, even though you'll find it to be a pointless event in the end!

Hooo... I'm just a tad bit too excited about this whole thing. LoL! They'd better have a sale on sweaters (wishful thinking)! I checked out their online bookstore and their sweater designs are some kinda crappy. I hope they'll have the good designs on campus. Don't tell me that the ones they have online are their actual stock, don't tell mee...

the actual bookstore is A LOT better than the online one :)

Yes! Then I don't have to spend money on second-rate generic, drabby college sweater designs.

Anyone else going on Admit Day? Seriously, visit this LJ community, "http://www.livejournal.com/community/ucsd", even if you're not an LJ member. You can still view comments and the information provided by the UCSD student members is really, really helpful.

j.project, thanks for the site..useful
are you planning to buy a sweater or did you think they would be giving them away on Admit Day?

i don't think they give them away haha. they're like at least 40 dollars each and public schools aren't that loaded...
but while you're in san diego, don't forget to see
the zoo (seriously it's awesome)
seaworld (only if you haven't seen it before)
seaport village (really pretty, touristy place near the harbor)
old town (if you want to be touristy again)
encinitas (take the 101 north from the Del Mar area until you see the big sign that says ENCINITAS-big surprise, and park near it and there's hippie shops and tourist shops and stuff. and really good food.)

as for la jolla, there's the UTC Mall kinda near the campus though I don't know why you'd want to go there
there's an El Torito, an Outback Steakhouse, and some other stuff like right down the road from UCSD, and farther down that road there's a fairly sized shopping complex with 2 movie theaters and grocery stores if you're bored or hungry.

hope that helps & i hope all of you enjoy your stay here :)

Mr. B--> hahahaha. That would be really really funny if they gave away sweaters on Admit Day, but UCSD will not give away sweaters. There's way too much budget problems in the UC system and the CA education system in general that sweater giveaways, if it ever happened, is a thing of the past.

I don't mind buying it from them, though, and I will get a sweater for sure. My cousin's giving me $$ so I can get her one, too. It's too bad that they're not giving sweaters away, ain't it? That would be more helpful. But I'm steadfastly holding out for a sweater sale of some sort during Admit Day! Just because I'm forever an optimist about things like that. :p

I'm glad that the link is useful! I've already commented on another user's journal about my major (she's graduating with that major, that's why) and her response to me is so effin' useful. I hope you'll be able to milk this community for all it's worth. Thank goodness Scribe posted that link.

nervous_breakdown--> Thank you for giving the tourists some hotspots to consider visiting! My parents are gonna wonder how I know about that UTC Mall. Hahaha

is Admit day really worth it? I would have to drive down from OC to check it out... they sent me all the fliers and stuff- but woulod it be beneficial?
