Advertising is a type of marketing. It is also a “marketing industry” like public relations or behavioral analysis (applies to many non business disciplines as well), or market research (polling and analysis).

Fields that relate to, but aren’t the same as marketing are:

Psychology
Economics
Graphic Design
Law (Agency)
Statistics

I spent many years as an account manager in an advertising agency. Unless you are in a big city, you won’t ever make BIG bucks. It’s a very interesting job because you typically deal with a wide variety of clients. I also was on the client side where I was the manager of Corporate Communications. You have the opportunity to make more money in that type of job. I have also been the VP of Marketing. Here’s the real place to make money but you have to be a lot more diverse in your skill base and it would benefit you to get your masters. I don’t know that you have to go to any particular school. Marketing encompasses everything from brand management to consumer research to social networking to website to collateral materials to events, etc. Some companies even throw sales into the marketing arena. You see that a lot. Why don’t you go on monster.com or some other job sites and read the job descriptions for advertising manager or marketing vp. That way you can see the differences. You will see a difference in the wage also.

thanks for all your help
