Advice for what to take Freshman year?

I was admitted for fall 2006. What should I take Freshman year?
I am undeclared L&S, leaning towards MCB.

I say try to take hard stuff rather than easy. Senioritis happens for college students too and you don't want all your hard classes at the end. If you do badly you can always just drop or swtich majors too since how you do in a weeder class will give you of how well you will do in the major.

So what are some of the hard stuff?

Take Chem 1. Take a math class. Take an English course. and take one elective.

seminar/decal

"+ seminar/decal"

What's that?

my first semester freshman year I took:

math 1B
chem 1A
Comp/Lit class
a decal

Avoid math at berkeley, if you can. Unless you're a masochist, then you should wear a gimp suit and sign up for as many math classes as possible at berkeley.

"What's that?"

a seminar is a chilled out 1 or 2 unit (usually) class where you have a speaker(s) give talks about a certain topic. They're not like typical classes as in there are usually no discussion sections and not many homework assignments.

a decal is pretty much a seminar run by Berkeley undergrads. Topics can include "Male Sexuality," "Recycling in California," "The Simpsons," and many other academic/bizarre topics. All decal classes have to be sponsored by a faculty member. Decals are usually 1 unit, very chill, and always pass/fail.

People usually take it for social reasons (e.g. Male Sexuality) and/or for the 1 unit so they could fulfill the 13 unit minimum required for non-graduating-senior L&S students.

Male sexuality? i didn't think they offered that anymore after the last class I heard about went to a strip club! And some seminars are essentially 1 hour discussion sections with the generally established professors that teach them. I like the program. I know people who are in four seminars!

I hear math after 1b is much better than 1b and before.

nah, math 53 was a bi*ch and so was 54.

Chem 1a - a decent amount of work, but compared to O-Chem, this is grade school stuff.
Math 1a - Easy A if you've taken Calc in high school. Seriously, it's EASY. 1b will not be fun, though, but if you switch to a major that accepts 16a/16b, you can take 1a and 16b and it'll work.
Astro c10 is a very fun class and also an easy A just because the material is so interesting and the professor (Filippenko) is the best you'll have.
Nutri Sci - easy A

I don't recommend taking a lot of seminars. Those were just a pain in the ass for me. No work or anything, but they're generally boring.

BTW, there aren't that many easy A classes at Berkeley so think about spreading them out.

How difficult is Math 1B?

i heard its pretty damn hard especially if you havent taken 1A to build a strong foundation.

what math is covered in math 1A?

I think you should add physics C10 to the list. Great material, amazing professor (Muller).

Also, seminars are great, but some people don't like them. I have a friend in four, and another who avoids them like the plague. aim, do you even avoid the four and three unit seminars?

Drab pick my first semester courses....i want to transfer into engine rememer that boo.

I think that Math 1A is equivalent to Calc AB in high school

yeaaapp atleast thats what i've been told too.

That's what they say. I didn't take 1a, but I took AB, and heard 1a doesn't do intergrals. In my AB, we certainly did that.
