^ Some decisions are out right after midningt or early in the morning, before school begins. If you are west of the Eastern Time Zone, you get them even earlier. Does he not know want to know those that are out before he goes to school? Kids are so different! Mine wanted to know every single one as soon as it was released. There was a lot of back-and-forth texting that day during school. Either way, best wishes for good results, however you decide to deliver them!
I went to sleep sometime around midnight; my all-nighter days ended decades ago. We had one decision in hand from a couple days back, and by the time DC went to school we knew 5 of 7 decisions. DC’s middle school didn’t allow the use of phones during school hours so had to wait until after school to learn the outcome of the other two schools. In hindsight I’m thankful for the sleep I got that night because of the range/intensity of emotions we had to deal with that day.
My daughter heard of her acceptance to Cate at midnight EST, so that one we knew before she went to school in the morning. It was her first choice, so that definitely took some of the pressure off. In therms of this year, Thacher sent us notification that results won’t be emailed until 4PM PST (!) So my son will be waiting until at least 7PM to get his complete list.
@GMC2918 – we got an email that my son’s first choice will be sending theirs at 6pm ET, so in the same boat. Sigh
If you really want to learn early, sign up for package notification. You will receive an email on the 8th or 9th that a package was sent to your house from a certain area. If you are not expecting one then you know.
@GMC2918 @buuzn03 Ugh!!! that will make for a long, long day. I think all of my son’s are released by early afternoon but first choice is early.
@laenen That is cheating! plus I have heard that less and less schools are doing that and/or they have figured out how to turn off those notifications somehow - is that inaccurate information?
@Korab1 – I am not sure how they can turn off notifications that one can set for deliveries to your property. Someone on this list must be aware of a school that does not send a package along with notification. Personally, I am not aware of one but you are probably right there has to be some.
@laenen I am just regurgitating what I remember reading in another thread. I have no idea if its accurate or not. This will give me something to do on M9, anyway, although I will be sure not to share anything I find with my son, especially since schools may or may not be doing it this year, even if they have done it in the past. I’m sure people will be posting their notifications on here that day, so we can keep an eye out for the schools to which he has applied.
@GMC2918 That would be funny to have kids at both Thacher and Cate! I’m sure it’s happened before…
@ThacherParent Yes! Although my daughter has a couple of friends in that same situation. She also knows quite a few kids at Thacher & there does seem to be a bit of cross-pollinization between the two schools due to dances, sports and other events. There’s a lot to love about that part of the world, and after our daughter’s tremendous experience there, I have a hard time picturing my son in New England
Some of the posts about package notifications are mine, and specific to the one from Andover. I get notifications but didn’t last year which some speculate is due to the school being able to “turn them off”, but since there were snowstorms during that time my guess is that the weather disruptions put a wrench in the notification system.
@Korab1 so if your kid’s first choice releases decisions early on M10, Andover must not be the first choice :(. No need to respond to that btw…
Didn’t even apply. No interest in a school that big, among other reasons.
Thanks for clarifying on the delivery notifications - your post may very well have been what I recall reading.
@GMC2918 and others…I think it’s great that the kids can restrain themselves…it’s us parents that have more anxiety I think! That is a good sign that they got this!
I joked with DS that I’ll be setting my alarm for the times these things come in, and he’ll be sleeping in on M10, oblivious! He’s ok with that! He said, I’ll see the emails when I get up, that’s fine.

B-) DS
And let’s hope all of us: :-bd
^^ Me icon was supposed to be one that looked like nail-biting! Maybe this: ;))
Peace is better :)>-
My daughter just got word that she has been asked to audition at the Alabama School for Fine Arts…we’re not Alabamians but we’re close enough–it’s a great conservatory (DD is a theater geek). She has her audition on March 11th. This is great because even if she is closed out of all the northeast boarding schools, she knows she at least has an audition at this school and has a chance there. Knowing this makes waiting for M10 easier.
If she does get into any of the northeast schools, we are going on a mammoth road trip to visit them. She has only seen Andover, Walnut Hill and St. Pauls, and she absolutely has to visit the campus before she decides. Having to plan a possible mammoth road trip that starts M10 (because we have to leave in the evening and stay in Birmingham so she can make the 7:45 audition time on M11) is taking up a lot of my mental energy, which is also helping me to make it to M10.
Fly from Birmingham on short notice? Drive from Birmingham to the Northeast? It’s our spring break so we can do either.
Life sure is interesting these days. I’m hoping it gets more boring REAL soon.
@Leslie41 - Great news on the audition!
Plane fares have been good recently…I’ve had to book a couple going in/out different airports and found great one-way fares. So, for instance, you could go Birmingham=>Boston then perhaps return New York=>Birmingham (or home depending on where your car is!) for same price as a round trip ticket. Just be sure when you rent a car to check no big surcharge for pickup and return at different airports (usually not if done in advance).
Driving all the way seems too much!
Perhaps book on Southwest (fare sale right now!) because they let you change tickets so you can guess at a good itinerary and change later if needed.
Good luck!
Thanks for that great advice! I’m thinking flying would be the way to go as well but if fares are astronomical that would be out. I am thinking she has a chance at Loomis or Northfield Mount Hermon–places that seem to accept more kids with lower ssat scores. My daughter’s were in the mid-70s overall. Good enough for those schools but not for Andover, on paper anyway. She would be a legacy at Andover and they really seemed to like her at her interview, so who knows? I’m pretty sure that St. Paul’s will be a no, Exeter as well. She needs financial aid because her parents are college professors and basically one year at boarding school is practically my entire salary.
The cost at the Alabama School for Fine Arts is at least something we can manage. About 14k including room and board for out of state students. We have decided we can manage 20k with everything included at the northeast schools, but that would include travel as well. I am guardedly hopeful for her but I realize that the ssat scores and the need for financial aid will be difficult to overcome in some cases. We applied to Walnut Hill, Andover, Loomis Chaffee, Choate, Exeter, Northfield Mount Hermon, and St. Pauls. Maybe one more I can’t think of now.
We have a education fund for her, but we do not wish to spend it all on boarding school and have nothing left for her when she hits college, so unless financial aid comes through in a big way it’s a no-go.
Southwest also flies to Bradley airport (north of Hartford), which is a good base for Loomis, NMH, Choate and Western New England generally. It’s a lot smaller and easier to get around the area than flying into Boston, rental car may be cheaper, etc. Good luck!
When schools send emails on decision day - is there a clue in the title? I agreed not to read them without DD who is skipping school that day to attend a workshop (which is better because I originally thought it was after school) and if emails say something positive I will know!
