Hello! I'm a freshman and this winter quarter I'm going to take the following classes:

-Chem 1B (with discussion and lab)
-Bio 5A (with discussion and lab)
-Math 9B (with discussion)
-LNCR for bio (since I'm in a learning community)
-Eng 1B (waitlisted)

I'm going to have to apply for work study as well.

I would like to know if this course load would be too much (including work study) since I have no idea what the difficulty for taking 18 units is. If anyone has advice, that would be much appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Short answer is, it is doable.

Since you are in learning community, the chem 1B, bio 5A is already registered for you. As for math 9B, it is an annoying class when i had it, but it isn’t that much of an annoyance. As for english 1B, it felt like a class that balance out all the science courses. I had the same course load (minus the work study), and I ended up fine, but the amount of time you spend on it will be a lot.

If you didn’t have the work study part, I would definitely suggest you to try it, but with work study, you will have to reconsider. Maybe push the work study to spring quarter (only negative aspect is you will be taking bio 5B, which is a pain) or drop english 1B for later.

Definitely doable. Chem1B, Bio5A, and math 9B are easy classes. English 1b depends on professor. I don’t know what is the learning community class, but I heard learning community classes are easy. If you spend a lot of time into those classes, I can guarantee you can get at least a B in all of your courses.

English takes more time than you think it will. If you’re aiming for straight 'A’s, I’d think about easing into it. Bio and chem are easy assuming you don’t have terrible professors.

This should be a piece of cake. The reality is, 18+ units don’t mean anything until you’re a sophomore or higher; that’s when you start taking real classes that “actually” require skill and ability. I took 22 units when I was a freshman, taking Bio, Chem, Math, English, and even a breadth course, all easy and doable in the quarter. If anything, freshman year was basically an extension of high school, so just don’t worry about it.

Thank you very much everyone. Sorry for the late response got caught up in the school work. I’ve pushed workstudy into spring quarter since I was immediately placed into english when I got back from vacation. My chemistry professor sure knows his information but I find it quite difficult to understand him. So for now I’m planning to not take English 1C next quarter so I can have a balance between that and my classes.

haha438 was right. Alot of time is being required of me to handle this course load.

Has anyone taken Nothnagel for Bio 5A by any chance? What are his midterms and finals like?
