Alabama Scholarship Likeliness

I was accepted to University of Alabama a couple days ago and I applied about a week ago. I was surprised by the quick response. I’m just curious as to what/if I am likely to receive in scholarships specifically from UA.
I HAVE…
4.0/4.0 GPA UW
1760 SAT ( 1200 CR M)
13/247 in my class (pretty competitive school)
1 AP and bunches of honors classes
Extra units of academic classes
involved in many ECs (sports, clubs, leadership)
Lots of community service
NHS applicant

I know my SAT scores are shy of some of the admission scholarships, but will I still receive any additional admissions scholarships that aren’t listed. I also filled out the scholarship app and applied for the Key Club Scholarship and the Graham Family endowed. Does anyone know the competiveness of these scholarships?
From past experience, etc does anyone think I will be given a decent amount of scholarship money from UA?

Are you OOS?

How much merit are you wanting or expecting?

The Graham Family Endowed is given to 3 students.

@mom2collegekids yes OOS. NJ. I’d love to have half my tuition paid for, but I’m starting to think that’s not realistic with my test scores. Which is unfortunate because my GPA meets the standards for all of the scholarships. My test scores show I’m not eligible for any of the automatic scholarships. Maybe they’re flexible with them? I don’t know.

No, they’re not flexible with scholarships to that degree. I’ve seen Bama give someone the full tuition award when the student had the necessary ACT 32+, but was slighly short with GPA (like a 3.45 GPA). The half tuition award requires a M+C SAT 1300, so you’re not close to that.

You might be awarded some small scholarships here and there, but getting half tuition is very unlikely. How much will your family pay each year?

alabama’s Alumni Association hands out about 1000 competitive awards, but I don’t think they’ll be enough to get to half tuition.

@mom2collegekids I’m not sure about my family yet. We’re still discussing that. We’re also waiting for the FAFSA to see what were eligible for, which is hopefully a lot. I just find it a bit ridiculous that with my stats I won’t be able to earn any merit scholarships just because of test scores which are still considered above average.

? I don’t think you understand what FAFSA is

What is your family’s income?

Are you low income? Do you realize that FAFSA is for fed aid? “Free money” from the feds is for low income students.

Have you run the NPC? What was the result?

@mom2collegekids Yes I understand what it is. My parents (step mom and father) make about $90,000 a year combined. My mother pays no child support and is not really in the picture. Haven’t run the NPC yet. planning on doing that this week.

Being above average isn’t enough to get substantial scholarships. You might get a small one.

Over 36% of Bama’s students have a M+CR of 1330+ That is more than a 1/3 of the students. that’s 130 points higher than a 1200.

There are other schools where a 1200 is high for the school. DId you apply to those?

You won’t qualify for any free money thru the FAFSA application. Your EFC will be well beyond the number for a Pell Grant.

@mom2collegekids I understand that…I was just hoping maybe considering other factors BESIDES test scores I could get some decent scholarships, but I guess that’s not the case. So far I have only applied to Bama and USC (South Carolina), but I am currently applying to UGA and local NJ schools. However, Alabama is my top choice. I should’ve taken the SAT over again and prepared for it. Although my SAT scores don’t reflect it, I’ve always been dedicated greatly to my school work and have never gotten a B in my school career.

So a household with $90,000 income each year will get me no federal aid?

Yes, you might get awarded a small scholarship for those “other” factors, but the award will not be a big one like those given to those with ACT 30+.

I hope you get the money you need. You do need to talk to your parents.

If UGA is OOS, don’t bother. They will NOT give you merit nor FA.

What is your home state?

@mom2collegekids Thank you.

My home state is NJ.

Only federal loans, which anyone can get.

Freshman year you can get a loan of up to $5500 if you file the FAFSA.

How much will your parents pay each year for 4 years?

Do you have any money saved from a job?

With your family’s likely EFC, you’ll only qualify for a $5500 loan and maybe $2k of work study.

I think you need to understand how large merit is typically awarded (Bama is unusually generous, so it’s more the exception).

Most schools that give good sized awards, only give to those whose test scores are well-within the top quartile for the school. That’s really all that most schools can afford to do. Most schools generally need most students to be paying most/all of the costs.

ECs rarely matter much for merit. They may help with the down-selection, but usually the stats have to be there first.

There is a HUGE pool of kids with high GPAs (this is due to grade inflation, easier curriculums, etc).

There is a smaller pool of kids with high TEST SCORES.

There is an even smaller pool of kids with BOTH high test scores and high GPAs. These are the kids who typically get the merit awards.

You might try some schools that give generous need based aid that are Test Optional.

What are the latest ACT scores UA will accept?

@Madison85 Just talked to my parents. They cannot afford to help me out with college so basically it’s all on me.

@mom2collegekids I understand. I just thought my high school achievements would pay off a little more . Hopefully I get some money.

@mommdc unfortunately the December test which has already passed.
