check bruinwalk?

checked. no information on LS1.

buuuuuuuuuuuump

I had them Fall Quarter 2011 when it was their first time teaching LS1. In my opinion, I thought they were fair professors. Their class is comprised of clicker questions (just for attendance), online reading quizzes (not bad as long as you do the reading), demos, 2 midterms (all multiple choice) and a final (all multiple choice).

Each professor teaches for about 3 weeks. All three professors are nice guys. They are concerned for student learning as they provide study guides for their part of the class and host review sessions (Alfaro - macro-evolution that will be tested for midterm 1, Novembre - micro - evolution (genetics, mutations, etc) tested for on midterm 2, Lloyd Smith- Ecology, populations tested on the final plus cumulative). I thought Novembre’s part of the class/midterm was the most difficult since he had a lot of critical thinking/analytical multiple choice questions. Alfaro’s part was straight forward and tested straight out of the study guide. Lloyd Smith’s part was similar to Alfaro’s.

Comparing this class to LS2, LS3, and LS4, it had the least amount of studying for me. There is a lot to memorize, but not as much as the other LS classes. I thought the material was more straight forward since you’re dealing with time periods, evolution, etc. Study off the slides and the study guides. Go to office hours/review sessions (including TA hosted ones) because they sometimes give hints of what they will emphasize on the tests.

Overall, I recommend these professors for LS1. Good luck! :)

so my dilemma is this:
I’m going to be a freshman, and I was wondering what to put as my schedule (Bio major). I was going to do the generic chem 14a, math 3a, and a ge (just three classes to get used to the work load), but only Lavelle teaches chem 14a. I’ve heard great things about him and not so great things about him. So my dilemma is should I skip chem 14a (leave it for Winter quarter) when Scerri will teach and take Ls1 with these teachers first, man up and take chem 14a with lavelle, OR take ls2 with schein (i hear ls1 doesnt have to necessarily be taken first). any advice would really helpp.
Thanks so much!

chem14A&B with Lavelle are not bad.

agreed, he wasnt very difficult. it was the intimidation that made it bad.
