Alumni Distinguished Scholarship

My S just got a message that he is one of 66 finalists for the ADS. He will be interviewed next week. Has anyone gone through this and have any advice?

My S received a voicemail on friday regarding alumni distinguished scholarship as well. We were not sure what that was though as they asked him to call him back. I hope it is to do with interview.

Mommaof5 - Congrats on your son’s interview. I can share what I heard about interview before. But pl dont quote me on that. It is informal and they might end up validating your application materials and essay to make sure you are serious about what you have written in the application. Good luck to your son on the interview. You must be very proud.

Jrkiyer - thanks for the info! Good luck to your S too!!!

How did it go for your sons? I hope they both get the full ride. :)

Do you know when results come out?

the interview was very weird. Just like that test they took. Lasted for only 15 mts. Will know the results by march 1st week.

I wouldn’t know if the interview was weird or not since it was the first one I ever did! I thought the interviewers were nice though.

I didn’t think the test was strange at all. Difficult? Of course. But I think it had to cover a wide variety of topics to find the right kids to endow the scholarship.

Hopefully everyone will receive good news come March.
So far the end of February has been pretty hectic for me and it seem March will too!

Just got a call from MSU that I got the ADS scholarship! Good luck to everyone else :)

Congrats becca! How much did you get? :)

The full ride (:

DS got the letter from MSU today, he ended up with the Finalist scholarship: $2,500 for 4 years. Good luck to everyone!

becca95 - Congratulations! That is awesome!

becca95, that’s amazing! Congrats! Are you going to attend MSU next year? :)

mommaof5, kudos to your son for an awesome job on the ADS test. Seriously, being in the top 66 out of around 1100 kids or so is like getting admitted into an Ivy League.

I just got the letter for the full tuition for 4 years.

Good luck to everybody whether it comes to ADS, being admitted to MSU, or deciding on where you’ll go next fall!

Congrats to your DS mommaof5 and congrats to you too, Mufeed! I don’t know if I’ll attend MSU: I also got a full ride at the University at Buffalo and I’m having a hard time deciding between the two. Any advice would be welcome!
How about you? Are you going to attend MSU next year?

becca,

You’re in a really lucky position to have 2 full rides! :)

The other college I applied to besides MSU was U of M. Michigan is giving me the Shipman scholarship, which guarantees over half tuition for 4 years and could amount to a full ride, so I’m playing the waiting game right now. The major (no pun intended :D) problem I have with MSU’s Distinguished Freshman Scholarship is that it covers full tuition for enough credits needed for a bachelor’s degree in a single major. That feels pretty limiting to me. I have strong, defined academic interests in two distinct areas, so it’s something I need to consider.

I don’t know too much about the University at Buffalo. I would recommend you post a thread in the College Search & Selection forum to ask people to compare MSU and U at B. You could also post a thread here and a thread in the U at B forum to ask people their experiences at these two colleges.

Either way becca, you’ve got great options regardless of where you decide to matriculate next fall!

Thanks for the suggestions! Good luck at U of M
Hmm…that is pretty irritating that it only covers a certain amount of credits. I want to double major in ChemE and Chinese so I have interests in different areas too. What do you want to major in?

Good luck to both of you deciding! My S has been accepted to Michigan with a full-tuition scholarship, U of Kentucky with a full-ride, UChicago with a very generous grant, Alabama - full-tuition and freshmen year housing, Fordham full tuition. He has one more acceptance to hear back from in a few weeks and FA letters for most of the schools. So still very undecided here. Good luck with your decisions, I am sure you will be successful wherever you end up enrolling!

I’m thinking about the same as you: Biochemistry and major or minor in Arabic. I also am interested in math to an extent, but I wouldn’t delve to deep into that field. I’d probably take a couple classes more than what a college freshman would just take for my personal enrichment.

I hope you and your family make the right decision between U at B and MSU! Both are ABET-accredited for chemical engineering, so they are great choices for your major.

mommaof5, you must be very proud of your son’s many impressive accomplishments! He sounds like a very intelligent guy with a lot of great options. I hope you and your son figure it all out amongst those amazing opportunities. :D

My S got distinguished freshman scholarship at MSU with full tuiton today. I think with PA assistantship stipend and state scholarship, it covers probably half room and board.
Waiting to hear from other schools as well.
Mufeed, if you are invited for shipman, you will get more than half tuiton even if you make semifinalist. So congrats on that invite.
Mommaof5 , did your son get full tuition at u of michigan ? That must be impressive too.

I received a phone call and voicemail on Friday. Several of my friends received letters saying that they either won $1500 per year or didn’t win anything. Did any of you get a call from Terrence Brown?

My S didn’t receive a phone call or voicemail. However, he got an email notification to schedule for his finalist interview next week.
