Hi everybody. This is my first time posting a thread, and I was wondering if I can get into the prestigious University of Michigan. I just completed my app 2 weeks ago so this will probably hurt my chances.

Stats:

Michigan GPA: 3.90 (top 5% rank in HS)
ACT:26
Ec's: A bunch of clubs and volunteer work. Varsity tennis (captain) and Make-A-Wish Foundation are my highlighted activities.
Essays: AWESOME! I wrote about my tragic experience 3 years ago when I was hit by an SUV moving at 35 miles per hour and how I overcame this experience. Could this be a hook?

Applied to LSA
OOS applicant

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Compeition for out of state students at Michigan is tough. Your ACT score puts you at the low end of the middle 50% of ACT scores. You may have a chance, but the car crash is doubtfully a good hook. I may give you a slight edge however.

the car crash is not a hook at all, why would u think it is. A hook is something you did or something amazing you can bring to this school (i.e. athletics, internships). Your exc are weak as well, how many Varsity tennis captains are there across the nation, how many students can volunteer for any foundation. Your ACT's are low for Michigan as well. I call you get deferred.

Thanks for the replies everybody. By the way, tennis and volunteering for the Make-A-Wish Foundation are not my only ECS as I mentioned already. I'm involved in canned food drives, am co-captain of the chess team, am on the basketball team, red-black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and a member of my school choir. As for the car crash essay, I also thought that it wouldn't be a hook, but I just wanted to make sure since I wasn't really familiar with the term. BTW, does anyone know someone who got into Michigan with a low standardized test score and an out of state resident?

Applying this late was definately not a good idea. You have a chance, but it is not great. U of M seems to care about GPAs more than test scores, so that may help. Good Luck.

people from my out of state school get into michigan with SAT scores in 500's
just apply, i think your GPA is good, and dont worry so much about the 26 ACT

Why do you guys say his chances are slim now that the application is "late"? Was the application filed AFTER the date that it was due? or was it filed nearing the date it was due? I have some transfer applications due March and want to know whether it will affect my chances if I turn in my application at the last minute (still on time, but last minute).

To the thread starter: Sorry to post but not answer your question, I figured it would be better to post this here instead of making a new thread.

No problem taromakino. I understand. BTW zkevin, how would you define a "reach" in percentages. Less than 10% of getting in? I'm hoping to at least get a deferral.

Western MI a reach? You've got to be kidding (or you are an alum).

I am going to guess that you will be rejected, based on scores and "late" app. I don't know any MI kids accepted with 26 ACT who are not URM or from a low socioeconomic background. D's friend was rejected with a 26, and her brother is a current U of M student. Not sure about OOS, but I would think it would be even tougher to get in. An especially difficult academic schedule would help, of course, as would phenomenal essays. Are you economically disadvantaged, by any chance? That would be a hook.

HOWEVER ... there is never a 100% guarantee either way regarding acceptance. It could happen!! I just would caution you that it isn't a great chance, so be sure to have a good backup that you would not be unhappy attending.
