Am I screwed because of a subpar freshman year?

I am a freshman year of high school I just moved to a new school. In eight grade I had all As other than 2 or 3 Bs. Then in freshman year I had horrible grades. First marking period I had three As, one B, and two Cs. In second marking period I got 2 As, 2 Bs, and two Cs. Now it is half way through the 3rd marking period and I have so far 1 A, 3 Bs, two Cs, and one F. Obviously the marking period is not over and there are not a lot of grades. But I am very nervous about my future. I realized now that high school is not joke and I am trying to take it serious and study for everything. But do I now not have a chance to go to a ranked top 100 college in the US? How big does freshman year matter if I really work hard for the next three years? Thanks for the answers.

As I tell my DS20, work hard now!! The classes in HS are in sequence, you can’t take AP if you are getting Cs in honors. Instead of worrying, study now to get As or Bs.

Best of luck!!

It’s still only your freshman year so consider it a learning process. In my freshman year I thought I sucked and had an awful time because I skipped ahead a grade. I did have all A’s and one B, but my mom wasn’t too pleased with that. Just work hard. If you have an upward climb then you stand a chance. Starts with C’s and B’s and a few A’s freshman year, no C’s sophomore year and try for less B’s. Then junior year and senior year aim for hard courses (but ones you can still handle) and all A’s, allow yourself a little breathing room though so maybe a B on really hard subjects. It will take a lot of work so spend your nights studying, Saturdays working, and try to aim for extra work over the summer if possible. And if you get an amazing score on the SAT then colleges will consider you. If you want to get into a good college it will be competitive, a lot of work, and frustrating. Don’t give up.

@skylarjeep Yeah maybe for HPYSM but other than that he might still have a chance

What are your final grades, those are really the only grades that matter. Also don’t give up hope, if you really, really want to get into IVY league colleges, retake your bad courses over the summer, and do some killer extracurricular activities. Also if you put into full blast sophomore and junior year, get all A’s take hard classes, Kill your standardized tests, participate fully in your EC’s you will make a very competitive applicant.
