am I screwed?

Hi-! I just got a D for math this semester. I
m a junior and I
m basically taking the hardest math class offered by my school (AP calc) . I consider myself pretty good at math. The teacher was a really difficult grader, the highest person grade in the class was a B-.
All my other grades are all A
s...
I haven
t recieved my AP scores yet, but I`m hoping to get atleast a 4.

My top choice right now is U of Chicago.
am I screwed? if I get a 4 on the AP test, and given that my other grades are all A`s and my counselor expalins that the teacher was a hard grader in my rec...do you say I still have a chance at Chicago??

yes - one grade wont kill you

I think you should be fine. If you do well on the AP exam, it should make up for the fact that you did so poorly in the class. Don't worry about it - you should be fine. Just be sure to get your guidance counselor to explain the situation.

Can't you make it up in summer school?

why would he want to make it up in summer school. It's not like the D is suddenly erased. Plus why waste a whole summer. As long as he did well in most other classes, then he should be ok. Hopefully that D didn't bring down his GPA much, if it did, that's when it's an issue

at my school if you retake a class over the summer and do better they drop the old grade from your GPA and only factor in the higher grade so it would allow a person to keep their GPA and class rank from dropping... but i think both grades still show up on the transcript

thing that sucks about my school is that they don't let you retake the really hard classes, only math up through algebra II and a few other classes...

I see Shazilla. Well in that case, maybe, but every school has different policies so I don't know. I would assume that yes, both grades show up on the transcript no matter what though.

it shows initiative. and if he is sure that the teacher is the reason hes doing so badly, then he should do well in summer school to validate the accusation. i personally dont see how a teacher being a hard grader would make someone who is "pretty good at math" get a D though.

nope, lets be frank. No one who gets into top school gets Ds EVER.... Sorry U of Chicago! (college admissions people will get totally distracted by that D) Maybe you're better off applying to community college...

and is this BC Calc or AB CAlc?

If the counselor shows the curve for the class, the one D is not a deal-breaker. Chicago, of all places, looks beyond the normal grades and scores. A 4 on the AP should cancel it out. I would write a note about the grade, though. No big excuse- just a brief explanation.

It won't kill you, especially because the school will see the 4+ and see that your math class was just insanely hard. Or they might think your lazy. To prevent them from thinking the latter do what MomofWildChild says and write a note.

You might consider writing a Letter of Apology to the dean of admissions and discuss what influenced you in getting a D, AP score, how you will try harder in college, etc (all in an apologetic tone, of course). You might want to talk about taking that math class at a local community college, which would show some initiative as mentioned by other posters.

Good luck!

Your chances are still good. It's not the best thing obviously, but it's not the end of the world.

Thanks everyone for the replies!
The thing is, I can
t really make up for my grades this summer as I am actually attending the summer program at University of Chicago- I
m doing this bio reserach program there.
I`ll ask my counselor to try and explain my situation...: (

i got an A- in AP calc, but i even didn't take the AP test

Can You Please Say If This Is Ab Or Bc Calc?

Ah yea. this is BC Calc btw...I
m doing full IB so I
ll be taking the HL Math exam next year as well.
I dont know how much BC calc makes a difference.. I mean BC calc is just a few extra topics than AB.

you wont be scerwed...it's just a little blemish on your record. It's not like you were slacking. You were taking the hardest math ever, but maybe you taking it at the wrong time. maybe it just wasn't the time for BC math for you. It's not going to destroy you. Where do u want to go to college?

Thanks icekiss for your comment!
Well, my first choice is U of Chicago... I hope it won
t destroy me :(
I know I wasn
t slacking off but a D will definately catch the eye of an admissions officer I`m sure and might take me out of the running for some top schools..sigh*

if you do great in math next yr...they will be more concerned about your growth as a student not that you nearly failed. Remember that it's not the fact that you've stumbled, but the question of whether you can pick yourself up again. That's what they look for.
