Has anyone that applied for the American Meteorology Society Scholarship heard anything yet? On the application it states winners will be announced ‘some time’ in May but I thought I read somewhere on some scholarship site that winners would be announced on May 2nd.
Didn’t any other budding meteorologist here apply for this? Anyone? even if you haven’t heard anything either???
Woot! DD got the call that she won the AMS scholarship!
Super congrats!! What is it worth, and what are her plans?
@Fallenchemist It’s a two year scholarship, $2,500 each year. She’s going to OU and wants to work on computer modeling for sever weather prediction. I’m super excited for her, it turns out that the gentleman that called her to inform her of the scholarship will be her advisor and he’ll be presenting at a conference she is volunteering at next month so they’ll get to meet before school starts.
Wow. What a great sequence of events. I can understand your excitement, and you must be very proud. I am sure I could look at some of your history and satisfy my idle curiosity, but which OU do you mean? There are several, although since it is meteorology I am guessing Oklahoma. I have heard they have an outstanding program, especially for the modeling of catastrophic events. @3scoutsmom
Yes, University of Oklahoma, it’s kind of tough for an Austin girl to head off to Oklahoma but their program is exactly what she’s looking for. She also plays an instrument that she will continue with in college and she really hit it off with the teacher for her instrument at OU, and she’s National Merit so OU is the perfect fit in every way. Even though OU has a very generous package for NM it isn’t a full ride. This, with her other outside scholarships makes it full ride for her first year! People here are shocked that she picked OU since she was an auto admit to UT Austin, she just tells her friends that she looks awful in brunt orange;-)
“she just tells her friends that she looks awful in brunt orange”
LOL
New favorite excuse for when people ask me why I’m not at [insert another school here]
@3scoutsmom my daughter actually wrote an essay about choosing her college in spite of their awful school colors (brown and yellow). LOL
Congrats on the scholarship and the great connections she has already made!
People always overstate the difference in going to schools like OU vs. UT-Austin or vs. UCB or vs. virtually any flagship state university in general, when it comes to the content and quality of their undergraduate education. Calculus is calculus, American Lit is American Lit, so on and so forth, unless there is some very specialized topic they are focusing upon, as in your D’s case. Unless UT has a program in that area of meteorology with which I am unaware, she couldn’t possibly do there what she will at OU. Add in the full ride aspect to that, and what a no brainer! Avoiding burnt orange is an obvious plus for her as well, not to mention that she won’t have muscular damage after 4 years of repetitive motion of her index and pinky fingers!
