Another Admission Chances Thread

I am a Junior in high school now, but I don't think it would hurt to start having people critique me. I was in South Carolina my first two years, and now I am a Florida resident.

GPA's will be coming up after the 2nd semester.
UW GPA: 3.37
W GPA: 3.60
FSU GPA: 3.57

Wont get my SAT scores back until Feb. 15, but I project them being in the 1200-1350 range. I'll post them up here asap though. I tend to do very well on standardized tests, and I felt that I did well last Saturday.

Here's a nice long course schedule since Freshman year. Keep in mind that my 9th-10th Grade years were graded on a scale of A=93-100, B=85-92, C=77-84, D=70-76. Other symbols are H=Honors, Nothing=Regular, and AP=Advanced Placement.

9th:
Research Technique H - 85 (B)
Global Studies H - 82 (C)
Geometry H - 85 (B)
English I H - 87 (B)
Physical Science H - 97 (A)
Concert Band I - 99 (A)
Algebra I - 100 (A)
10th:
Biology H - 92 (B)
Government & Economics H - 90 (B)
Spanish I - 95 (A)
English II - 84 (C)
Concert Band II - 99 (A)
Algebra II H - 86 (B)
Int. Business Apps. - 90 (B)
11th (so far):
Pre-Calculus - 88 (B)
German I - 100 (A)
Office Aid - 100 (A)
American History H - 88 (B)
English III - 94 (A)
Chemistry H - 95 (A)

Taking the same schedule for this semester, and my senior year will probably look like this:
Percussion Class
Symphonic Band
AP Government
AP Physics -or- Calculus
German II
English IV

I am a bigtime musician (percussionist) and I have a couple of great experiences that will look wonderful for extracurriculars such as:
Touring with Carolina Crown Drum & Bugle Corps - summer of 2006, 2007
Touring with Epiphany Indoor Percussion Ensemble - spring of 2005
Long Bay Youth Symphony Percussionist 2004
Section leader of my old band in SC, played there for 2004-2006
Playing in the band next year here most likely 2007-2008
Possibly auditioning for All-State, All-County, etc.
and also:
State Champion SC Tennis Team in 2006, Finalist in 2005
Science Fair Regional Gold-Medalist in Physics Category 2006
Invitation to German Convention in Daytona Beach (5 selected in 2 classes) 2007
German Club
Beta Club
National Honors Society pretty soon
Possibly Varsity Tennis for this year too

Thanks for any feedback!

If you really get the SAT score you predict, I think you will have no problem being admitted. You have excellent musical and athletic talent. Make sure you inform the admissions personnel of the difficult grading scale so they realize you had nothing below an 82 in any academic course. Best of luck to you.

GUNOT-You too man, hope you get some good scores back.
cybermom- Thanks for the kind words, I'm crossing my fingers for the 15th!

Anybody else have some feedback?

I think you have a very good chance of getting in. It all depends on your SAT scores, but everything else looks good.

One more week...hah, I'm pretty anxious.

1 month and 2 days till I take my SATs =x

If your SAT is 1200-1350/1600 and a Florida resident, with those courses I think you'll do fine. If you get something above a 1300/1600 (changes from period to period) you may even get an invitation to the Honors program. Just depends on the competition coming in that year. I would suggest you re-take the SAT/ACT a couple times and maximize your chances of Honors and university scholarships: FSU Scholarships

You might want to consider trying out for the Marching Chiefs. The percussion section is/was called "Big 8" and they are really something to watch. FSU has an excellent marching band. Prior to big football games some of the Chiefs walk around the dorms on campus and play. It's a great time. :)

And remember - as soon as you are accepted go straight to the Housing website and apply for housing.

Thank you parent2noles for the detailed information! I have considered trying out for the 'Big 8' drumline if I get accepted to the school...and I've heard a lot of great things about the marching band. I'm planning on majoring in music performance, but I've heard the drumline is even harder to get a spot in (due to the music + non-music majors being able to audition).

Big 8 is a coveted position...but my wife made Chiefs, although years ago. If you have any questions, I have a pretty good reference available. :)

I cant wait to hear from them. The hardest part afterwards is deciding where you want to go among the accepted admissions you've recieved.

What do you want to study? That'll make a big difference.

I ended up getting a 1220 (CR+Math) this time, but fortunately I know I can do better (because I didn't study). I'll be re-taking it in May, and this time I'll put forth the hours into working on each section. I'll also be taking the ACT in March or April...so we'll see how that goes. But with the stats listed above^ plus a 1220 SAT, how do I look?

...Bump...

Check out the bottom of the last page for my updated SAT scores.

A 1220/1600 is a decent score - good work! You're within striking distance of Honors (hopefully, you need at least a 1300 minimum) and with the middle 50% of the Fall kids last year. Take as many APs as you can...they really help.

Study, study, study! Get that prep course and keep at it.
