Another regular Asian... Please Chance I'll Chance Back

I'm an Asian American junior in Long Island wanting to major in engineering. I feel like my portfolio is very good, just not the "above and beyond" the top colleges are looking for (my EC's are lacking a bit). Can you chance me at Cornell, Princeton, Columbia, MIT, Caltech, Stanford, Berekly, CMU, and Northwestern? Be aware I know the top colleges like MIT, princeton, etc are almost impossible for me I want to know if I have a chance and should apply lol.

SAT: 2300 Superscore (730 CR, 790M, 780 W) Individual (710,720,780) and (730, 790, 700). I dont know if I should retake it a third time I'm probably deciding against it.

SAT II: 800 chem, 730 Bio E (yea...), probably 800 Math II (been getting that consistently)

GPA: 4.08 weighted; 3.96 unweighted. It'll probably go up considerably I am almost guaranteed an A+ in all my junior classes by now

AP courseload: 10th grade World (5). 11th grade: AP Chem, Lang, AP Calc BC, AP US. 12th grade: AP Comp Sci, Multi, AP lit, Ap gov, Ap Eco, Ap Stat, AP Physics C (E+M)

Rank: Top Decile. Chance for valec/salut who knows (my school is a nationally top 100 ranked public school, but it's also Long Island so go figure)

EC's:
Probable merit scholar (229 psat)
National Honors Society
Football all throughout high school (JV + Varsity). I'm close at getting captain for senior year the coach hasn't decided yet. I do play alot and most people believe I will get the final captain spot.
Founded and president of anime club (LOL)
ABRSM and NYSMA (a ny thing) for piano completed all levels
Tri-M for one year (weird... it was for my piano abilities, but I quit orchestra the year after because our orchestra has no piano and I focused on cello, which I dislike, so I ended up getting kicked out)
Won honors mentioned in WAC Long Island Science Fair (submitted Siemens team but didnt make it)
Co-author of a published paper (researched in the Hospital of Special Surgery for biomechanics)
300+ hours volunteering in hospitals (winthrop, HSS, etc)
Other clubs that I attend but am not really committed too (like DECA, coding club, etc.)

I know I dont have alot of EC's like mathletes, robotics, etc. football took alot of time out of my schedule (the one sport that makes you do offseason workouts like 24/7 right after the season ends -____-). I try planning on doing those clubs senior year if I can. I also am continuing with research for the summer (the same place, or an institute it depends. I was rejected by Rockefeller though). Any tips on how to better my EC's in basically the end of junior year?

Thanks
BTW chance my friend's in link below he needs more help than me lol

Cornell: reach/high match (see comments below)
Princeton: super reach
Columbia: reach
MIT: super reach
CalTech: reach
Berkeley: high match
CMU: match
Northwestern: high match

Comments: I think you have a solid chance (well,as good as anyone else’s really) at any of these schools. If MIT is a top-choice/near top-choice, make sure you get a 5 on the AP Chem and Calc BC tests. Apparently, they are a major factor in your decision. Try to see if you can go to a math/science summer program. I know Brown has a whole bunch of course offerings. If Cornell is a top-choice, I would recommend applying ED. I think you have a serious shot with that. Good luck, it looks like you’ll wind up somewhere amazing!

I’m really thinking about ED Cornell, especially because it’s engineering is awesome, but my parents are kinda against it. First of all, my school apparently does extremely well with Cornell (thats what my gc said), so they think I can get in regular decision. Second of all, my cousin got into cornell, and she had worse stats than me on almost everything (2190 sat, for example). I dont know I’m really undecided on that

Also, are those Brown summer programs research? I’m in the science research program in my school, so I kinda have to have a research facility to submit to INTEL next year (or else i get kicked out and lose honors credit). If they aren’t, I think it would be a hard time for me to go unfortunately :frowning:

your ecs don’t really have to do with engineering. why did you choose engineering? sounds more like u r premed. Unless you change this, your chances are slim…

lol dude you can’t get into any of those. they’ll see you’re the anime club founder and president and immediately reject you

@Sharingan100‌
Really? That’s bad news, considering i dont really want to be a doctor… My research was on engineering, though (biomechanics). The rest of the EC’s i dont think fit with premed (like, I didnt join medical frontiers or whatever). I’ll try to join robotics club, mathletes senior year though if that helps. If it’s the hospital that makes you think premed, the volunteer hours went to researching, not like doing med stuff.

@hagbardceline‌
I doubt that would actually happen. They’d probably like that I did what I wanted to do in high school rather than do random clubs to impress colleges. Theres some fricken pokemon clubs in Columbia. If it was a problem, anyways, I would just not put that in my app and problem solved, right?

Don’t listen to @hagbardceline‌ , you have an okay shot at all of these schools. Founding and being the president of a club shows leadership and determination. I will admit, however, that most of the schools on your list are high reaches, if not reaches.

@leavingNYC‌
I know MIT, Princeton, Caltech, Stanford and Columbia are obviously very high reaches. What about Cornell, CMU, and Northwestern? Would it be advisable to just ED Cornell? Or take a shot at those really high colleges?

I think you might be best of trying ED to Cornell, that may be your best shot.

Make sure to chance me back:http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1613053-chance-me-what-schools-would-be-reaches-matches-and-safeties-for-me.html#latest</a></p>

UCB, Northwestern, and Cornell should be high match. ED Cornell sounds a good idea. Whether to retake SAT1 is your call. Retake only if you can improve significantly and for the schools that do not superscore like Berkeley. Are you interested in Biomedical engineering?

Berkeley: Match
NWU: High match (if ED)/Reach (otherwise)
Cornell: High match (if ED)/Reach (otherwise)
Columbia: Reach (Fu or College)
MIT: Reach
CMU: High match
Caltech: Reach
Princeton: Reach

Your ECs do not have to do anything with your intended major. What you need to present is a clear picture of why you did the ECs you chose and how they reflect on you as a person. Do that and your EC could be counting grains of sands on a beach, as long as the larger, deeper picture of why you are counting grains of sand is well-presented.

@awcntdb‌
Thank you. What you just said made alot of my anxiety go away.

You are welcome. Good luck!

@billcsho‌
Biomedical engineering is definitely something I’m interested in. I like computer engineering a lot, too (I know i didnt take comp sci yet, but alot of my research had to do with coding with this unique algorithm believe it or not). Of course I’m keeping my options open, though.

The Brown programs are (for the most part) not research related. But unlike many programs, Brown’s programs last for different lengths of time (some for 6+ weeks, others for just a week). And if I remember right, there is a genetics and an engineering course that might be of benefit to you.

A “regular Asian” playing varsity football. My parents won’t even let me touch a football (jk)

Not gonna lie… I only did that to get more views :stuck_out_tongue:

haha

Cornell: high match/ reach
Princeton: reach
Columbia: reach
MIT: reach
CalTech: reach
Berkeley: match/ high match
CMU: match
Northwestern: match
