I've decided to take some AP courses senior year, and have chosen about 6. But before I lock them into my schedule, I wanted some feedback from some fellow CC'ers on how hard you personally found the coursework, exam, etc. The courses I'm considering for next year are:

AP Comp Sci
AP Lit
AP Psych
AP Stat
AP Econ
AP French

AP Lit was fairly difficult for me, you have to know a lot of rhetoric devices and write solid essays. Then again I’m not much of a writing person…

AP Stats was extremely easy, you just need to know some probability as well as z-, t-, chi-square, etc. tests and when to apply them.

I’m in AP French right now and the exam seems scary. The hardest part for me is listening to an audio (often the speaker has some really weird accent or something just to confuse you) and understanding it well enough to be able to answer questions on it. Also, it’s really hard to listen for key words in the section since more than one multiple choice answer will be said word for word in the audio- you really have to comprehend it.

in my AP Psychology class, we have no Chapter tests. the material itself is extremely easy and even fun to learn. your homework will probably consist of several essay questions each chapter to prepare you for the exam, which takes about 30-45 minutes a night depending on how much you know about the section. hope this helps!

All of those exams, with exception of French, Lit., and CompSci are common self-studies (actually, I’ve heard of a number of people doing Lit and CompSci as well). As far as the actual exams go (assuming that, as a senior, you’ll even care about them), you should be fine with actual classes and studying.

As far as coursework goes, AP class rigor significantly vary between teachers and schools. My school’s AP Environmental class entailed an incredible amount of studying, essays, and group projects until last year, when a new teacher took over; now, APES has come to stand for AP Extra Sleep. And note, this was the difference between two teachers in just one school. Take my tip and get off CC and befriend some current upperclassmen in your school. Ask THEM how those classes are like - given that they’ve actually taken them, they should have more relevant feedback than a group of strangers on CC.

I am currently taking AP Lit right now. Overall it is a challenging but fair course. So far we have covered vocabulary, short stories, essay skills, novels, and poetry. AP classes are meant to be challenging and take up time. Depending on your personal interests in English and Literature, you will do well in AP Lit.

Yeah figure out how the teachers are. Either they’ll teach well/assign work all the time, or like for me, it’s all about learning the content yourself and covering zero content in class…
