Any comments on Orientation and Scheduling

Zebes we will see, I guess registration is going on right now. At Orientation they continue to make the point that you have to trust us based on our years of experience. With respect to classes we will be opening up other sections and times.

I was out to lunch today, but got back about 1:15, registration I guess started at 1:30. I saw very few new classes and seats opened up when I looked. Of course I'm not logged in, just looking at the online catalog, the actual system maybe something different. Some classes opened maybe 3 seats. I guess it's nail biting time, but it should be pretty much over by now. Waiting for the report, next I guess they are off to the Dorm Tour which is the final item.

I just got the call, she got all the courses and the prof's that she wanted to get, but I'm a little confused. She said her Art adviser told the kids to only take 4 courses so that is all she signed up for. When I add up the GEP and Art course requirements it's very dicey to get the work done in two years.

She will need to take at least 3 classes (9 credits) during summer sessions so maybe that will make up the difference. Most kids are advised to take a lighter load first semester freshman year to get adjusted to college level academics (while learning how to balance their new independence and social lives).

Yeah, the advisors really don't like to give the students more than 12 credits first semester. I went in thinking I'd take 15, but my advisor basically said no. I wasn't going to argue with him, because I'm going in as a sophomore anyway so I can afford to take a lighter first semester.

Whoo! on getting the teachers and classes she wanted, Ray. :) Yeah, DS has 5 classes, worth 13 credits, I believe. One of the classes is a freshman honors symposium that he's required to take, and it's only worth one credit.

zebes

Is that true? My S told me that in FL public univ. it's a requirement for 9 credits in summer. This summer, the typical course load is 6 credits. (and some kids are taking only one 3-credit course!)

Having it layed out ahead of time really helped her. She had one sheet which was her cheat sheet for Prof's that rated them for quality and the ones she wanted to try to get. On the other sheet she had a spreadsheet of her schedule. I suggested going after Math first which was a good move, they had few (count them on one hand) openings in the small section's as opposed to the large lecture and TA discussion group. She was able to just go down the list look at her sheet of the people she wanted to try to get and then when she found them just click click. Those small sections went away in a real hurry.

She told me some kids were really struggling, they hadn't looked at a schedule or the courses/prof's ahead of time. I suspect there will be alot of drops and add's before school starts.

It is a requirement for summer courses, but if you have previously earned AP or CLEP credit you can use that as your summer credit.

Mishdoob1, I think it is 9 credits away from the regular semester. They do not have to be taken in one summer. Also, if you have any AP credits, they count towards the required 9. I am not sure, but online courses may count, too.

To respond to the question about the closet - yes, it is surprisingly good sized. There is also plenty of room under the beds for storage.

I think we are going to go with the 15 meal plan, it has $200 in flex bucks. Also I have to read through the info on the purses.

We opened a Sun Trust account for no money :-)

Well now that is over so I can start paying Tuition, Housing, Meal Plan, Supplies, Room Stuff :-).

BTW it's just about 30 days until school.

Curious when are all planning to move in?

I think I'm moving in that Friday, but nothing has been set yet. I need to make the decision soon though so my dad can reserve a hotel room and a plane ticket back home.

My S will probably go get signed in on the first day, don't know if we'll take all his stuff then ... we'll probably do dribs and drabs, and I need to see the room to know what else we might add, i.e. extra bookshelves or an extra chair for comfort, etc. But for us, it's easy as we live local, and he can use his home as an extension of his closet. LOL

zebes, who just paid for housing. gulp. :)

My wife found this virtual tour today, kind of funny

CoasterPhil.

My wife and daughter stayed at the Day's Inn 11639 East Colonial Drive

Nice Hotel and reasonable, we will stay there again for dropoff.

I like the Homewood Suites on Alafaya. It is pretty new, has mini kitchens with microwaves, and serves a good complementary breakfast every morning!

Just sent off the Housing payment!!

Daughter just went out the door with newly acquired UCF wear on, they had a pretty good trip over to Knights Corners Bookstore, but I think they were out of alot of stuff that they wantes. She did get her hooded sweatshirt and a few tee's though.

Today we put here on the thirty days and counting plan, need to do something everyday to get prepped. We went to Wal Mart and bought enough plastic totes that would fit in the car, that's your allotment. Next step something needs to appear in the totes. Motivation is pretty lax this summer.

We signed her up for the Critical First Two weeks Seminar for 4 hours yesterday. Anybody have any comments about this course?

The SLS 1501 course looked interesting, but she already had a half year college transistions course and the way the schedule shook out and the small number of electives she seems to have room for, it wasn't going to work right now.

What is going on with your kids and their set of current friends? We are getting the I'm never going to see these kids again (not true) and not much focus on anything other than being with them and going to work. Just wondered if you are seeing similar things?

I am not sure if this is the same course but last year the semester long 3 credit SLS course (freshman experience thing) filled up early and, due to popular demand, the school added a one day "mini course". I know of one girl who took it and her mother (mind you, I did not speak to the student) told me that it was definitely worthwhile. Sort of a crash course in how to study, be organized and survive college 101.
