I put my housing request in early, two days after I received my acceptance. Having my own bedroom is a priority to me and I was even willing to take a studio (although very expensive) and what did they give me? Sunset Village triple with a shared bath! What a joke… So I don’t think that getting your housing request in early makes any difference. I doubt doing a CAR will do any good so I will be checking out apartments near UCLA. For the price they want at Sunset Village I’m sure I can find something decent where I can have my own room. I actually envy your offer - way better than being stuck in one room with 3 people including a loft bed. I’m 21 as well - I’m afraid they will stick me with at least 1 freshman too.

That’s odd I put that I wanted a Res Hall and I got the opposite thing and you put that a single and you got the exact opposite as well. It’s like they should have given me your offer and they should have given you mine.

I know - I was thinking the same thing! Personally I wonder how much they take your “preferences” into consideration. I’ve been reading some old threads and a lot of complaints about not getting housing anywhere near what people wanted. I’m thinking maybe they just throw names in hats and randomly pick at this point :)

I was hoping they’d do it according to preference. I even put that I wanted no drinking and no smoking and from what I know that isnt allowed in the dorms. Now I’m worried about the people Im gonna be living with. I dont want have people that are gonna be drinking and wanting to throw parties in the apartment all the time. I also wanted a dorm cause it’s easier to meet other people (so since im off campus and im gonna be away from all that)

Then again, things happen for reason so we’ll see.

Okay so my friend and put each other as a roommate preference. Right now we have the exact same housing offer (studio 2p). So… is it guaranteed that we are going to be sharing the studio or not?

^
Probably so, but you won’t get the actual name of your roommate until July.

To the others: I think the best thing to do at this point is to call Housing. They can work with you, it might take some time, but I would rather get this taken care of. Another thing you have to realize is that UCLA over enrolled this year…a lot of freshmen. This being said, freshmen are guaranteed housing for three years, and because they were accepted before you and all that…they get preference for the housing. So it wasn’t about turning it in early and such, it was now at the point where they simply wanted to place someone in a spot. But like I said, definitely call up Housing, and let them know your situation, be really persuasive about it, (i.e.: tell them you don’t want to deal with later getting into confrontations, dealing with stress, ETC) and hopefully they will work with you. I know another transfer from this year who originally got dorms but wanted university apartments, so she called Housing up and after a long discussion…she got the best UC apartments…so it’s all a matter of words.

Hey Rhee, thanks for replying so quickly when I was freaking out XD Apparently, a triple in a plaza without the “shared” tag means it’s a private bath, thank goodness!!! However, I’m still anxious about Sunset Village because I seem to be reading so much negative things about the place (is it that horrible?) If I submit a CAR, do you think I could possibly get a triple with a private bath in a different plaza? If not, I really want to try for a double with a private… Sorry LAST question lol: If I submit a CAR, will it jeopardize my current offer? I was assuming I would get a better offer or I wouldn’t and just have to stay with the one I have.

Thank you :D

ETA: I would definitely call (I did call about the triple thing) but what makes me hesitant is…I don’t want to say “Oh, I heard this place is bad” or anything lol

^
You didn’t get Saxon which is right by rape trail, LOL. I think it will be fine to be honest. If you fill out a CAR, you will still have to accept your current offer. The CAR is done the second week of fall quarter…I explained this already…but basically you head on over to Covel and meet up with other transfers who want to switch. Essentially, the purpose is to find someone who has the assignment you want and switch with them. It will not jeopardize anything.

If you do call, I’m not sure what you can tell them…the whole “I heard” thing is really…unrealistic. Just because it is bad in someone’s else’s opinion, doesn’t mean it will be for you. For example, a bunch of people say DeNeve is “not social”, but I beg to differ.

If you need more help, drop me another question! Good luck!

I was assigned to Saxon Suites. I heard though that its a complete downer and its not social by any means. However, I heard they are the nicest rooms on campus. Are these stories accurate? Also in the suites, when it says triple room, is there 3 seperate bedrooms since its an appt style?

Thanks Rhee about the suggestion to call housing. I was under the impression that there is really nothing you could do once the housing offer was made except to try to do CAR. I will call them on Monday. I know the freshman had first pick and enrollment is up but I was hoping I wouldn’t get the worst possible housing assigment they could give me. You have been a big help - thanks for all your time!

I hate to ask this question because i feel like you have probably gotten it before and I have actually asked a ucla rep this myself however I am always hearing diff stories.

so my question is…

in terms of the foreign language requirement, if you completed IGETC (which requires two years of the same foreign language) then you are done with your foreign language requirements right?

I took two years of French in high school and passed them with at least a C and my IGETC certification has already been sent to UCLA.

however my friend told me that someone from ucla told her that you can only be finished with the foreign language requirement if you took AP tests or a placement test.

but i asked a ucla rep and she told me since i took 2 years of french in high school and since my major (psych) doesn’t require additional years of foreign language then I am done with it.

Hello all! Hope you’re having a less stressful weekend than I am! It’s the last week–finals!
For those of you doing summer session, enjoy your time off!

Anyways…

To jg2290: I honestly do not think they have the nicest rooms on campus, that’s…yeah, LOL. I think they have the spaciest rooms on campus, I’ve been inside one and yeah, I can attest to that. Once you see the area it’s at…you’ll decide whether you like it or not. Most people whom I’ve spoken to think the place is creepy and “unlike the other on-campus” housing places, I agree. It is socially a complete downer, but they do have a basketball court nearby and I think a volleyball court too…
But to answer your last question, yep! I think you’ll get used to it.

To uclakid: It’s simple. If you have completed your IGETC and are going to get certified (your actual CC signs off that you have completed your IGETC) then UCLA will take that as completing your foreign language requirement, along with all the other GE requirements. If you passed your AP tests in those languages, the only difference is that not only do you complete that foreign language requirement but you also get unit credits. That’s all, you should be good.

Did you apply for the tap scholarship? If so what were your stats when applying & if we already have a full ride do we get to pocket this money if we won it

^
I didn’t apply for the TAP scholarship because it’s a super competitive scholarship, plus I didn’t want to do the paperwork and such.
The Financial Aid Office requires you to notify them once you receive any outside scholarship. If you end up getting this scholarship, you have to inform the FA office and they have a right to lower your gift aid, but anything that you don’t have to use you do get to keep–you get each quarter, depending on how much money you’re receiving.

Thanks Tiff i really appreciate you doing this!
and one more question…i know you said westwood chateau is nice but how about gayley towers? (i looked on google maps…its in between two frat houses -_-)

I was assigned a double w/ shared bath in Rieber Terrace. What can you tell me about Rieber Terrace? I have yet to see any other transfer student assigned to RT.

Everyone: Fall Schedule and for the rest of the year is out! Go check them out when you have the chance! Unfortunately, only the classes are out, not the actual times and such…grr!

To 360atoms: I did not understand what you were asking me. Are you asking: which is the best lot? It which case I wouldn’t know, depends where you are on campus, ETC.

To uclakid: I just realized that I passed by Gayley Towers everyday on my way to South campus. It’s actually the closest to DeNeve (campus) than any of the rest. It might get a little noisy due to the cars…and the frats but the proximity to campus is nice!

To gcarrillojr: Rieber Terrace is NICE. It’s across from Rieber Vista, it’s really nice and you’re lucky to have gotten a double! I’m sure that your Orientation Counselor will be there, so you’ll get to see a typical Rieber Terrace room!!!
