Any recent NMF experience with ASU?

Hi all. Although there is NMF scholarship information available on the web site, it is not as clear or definitive as it is from some other Universities because you need to go through the nifty calculator and infer based on the simplified results.

Does anyone with recent experience have information on what the current NMF ASU-BtHC scholarships really look like? Is it simply “16,000” or are there additional scholarships which are typically added or available for incoming freshman?

In state, if it matters.

Hi,
My D18 is considering ASU/Barrett as well.
I agree that the website is pretty cryptic.
Have you run across this supplemental scholarship? https://scholarships.asu.edu/scholarship/gammage
Only four scholarships are given out each year, but it’s only for “National Merit Semifinalist and Finalists, National Achievement Semifinalists and Finalists, and/or National Hispanic Finalists,” so the applicant pool will be limited.

I spoke with an admissions officer a couple of weeks ago regarding logistics of making a Barrett visit; specifically, the customized visit for NMSF/NMFs. She said that their office is restructuring that visit program and she wouldn’t have the details of which components will be available until Aug/Sept. (I went ahead and booked our flight for late Sept and we’ll just do whatever we can do.) So, keep checking the Barrett website in Sept, just in case they do some more widespread reorganizing.

Thanks @ShrimpBurrito - seems like we are targetting some of the same places.

Since we are local, we were not going to visit Barrett until September and classes are in session.

I’ve seen the Gammage scholarships, and like you saw there are four. Even with only 100 NMF (I seem to recall seeing that somewhere) that’s not great odds for low EC students like mine!

Are you following the Florida saga? It appears their about-to-be-passed new budget will make OOS NMF students eligible for their Benacquisto scholarship–a full ride at any Florida public university. It seems too good to be true, but here is the thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-florida/1960940-bright-future-scholarship-increases-flat-rate-tuition-block-tuition-oos-benacquisto-scholarship-p1.html

Be aware that Barrett costs extra (like $2k) and some fields (like eng’g) do too. A friend was upset that the real tuition was not wholly covered by the scholarship.

@TempeMom
Good point. I know the dining plans for example seem more expensive. Is your “2K extra” figure from fees, housing, meal plan, all the above? (I think the base tuition is the same)

Barrett related R&B upcharges.

Yup, that’s what I thought! The place looks nice though…

I am going into Barrett as a Freshman in the Fall with NMF. For this, you only get the basic $16,000 a year merit scholarship (if you are an in-state student). You are eligible for multiple other Barrett exclusive scholarships simply by filling out an extra web form, but don’t count on them. I applied to those as well as a few other Barret-exclusive scholarships, but did not receive any (although keep in mind that some are need-based and I did not qualify for need-based aid). I did get a lot of aid from other sources, thankfully, but long story short, NMF only guarantees the $16,000 a year, Barrett or not.

Thanks @Dax123
We won’t qualify for need based aid, so the additional merit scholarships are what we are focusing on.

What are you studying? Are a lot of your high school peers attending Barrett? What other aid sources did you receive? External scholarships?

@DavidPuddy I am studying Biophysics for Pre-Med. I think maybe 3 or 4 other people from my school are also attending Barrett. I applied for several scholarships on the ASU scholarship portal on their website and received maybe half of the scholarships I applied for, as well as some scholarships from local community service organizations for my work with them.

I would definitely take a look at the ASU scholarship portal and apply to some scholarships on there. If you can pump out maybe one application every two weeks starting around November, you can definitely get some extra aid on top of your base meit scholarship. Some of the scholarships on the portal are need-based, but many are merit based, and if you can apply to some of the more obscure ones, then you have a pretty decent shot at getting money. You can also use external sites to find scholarships, but I didn’t find many of those sites to be very effective.
