well, i won't be attending GMU next year. recently got my acceptance letter from UMW! still, i'd like to receive my acceptance/rejection letter from GMU. maybe i'll get it today...

congrats! my friend is also going to UMW and my cousin's wife is currently there studying to be a math teacher. its a good school, i just don't like the area lol

it's too bad that you don't like the location, because, as you pointed out, it's a good school, and it's relatively easy for applicants like me, who are lacking in the GPA department, but are strong in other aspects of the application (such as recs or essay). You probably could've been admitted.

yea maybe...man halfway, i still haven't heard from jmu or gmu :(

yeah, i still haven't heard from those two as well. however, JMU has admitted to a delay in mailing off some of the decision letters, and so to appease for their mishap, has notified acceptances (unsure about rejections though) through e-mail to those who would receive their official letters late because of the delay. have you checked your e-mail, fhshortie08? I never got one. That's probably not a good thing, but we'll see.

Hmm. Halfway gets it, all the way from overseas. GMU seems like a community college because it's surrounded by giant parking lots. There are lots of commuter students. (I'm one, technically. I'm doing graduate work at GMU, and I work full time. Hence, I "commute" to GMU.)

Academically, however, GMU is NOT like a community college. I've taught at the community college level, and there are significant differences. Also, there is a campus community at GMU, where community colleges cease to exist when the last class shuts down at night.

Some GMU programs could be called "third tier". Some, however, are quite competitive and well-respected.

West Springfield, eh? A stone's throw from my house (and this computer). My kids, however, went to Lake Braddock.

RB

What kind of graduate work are you doing at GMU?...
I know that certain undergraduate programs, like the political science and pre-law programs, are well-regarded. How does GMU's business program compare? Are there good work opportunities outside of campus, like there probably would be for the aforementioned programs? Of course, if you can't answer them, that's okay...but if you have some knowledge of the business program, i'd love to hear it, even though i'll probably attend UMW.

our house was close enough to the school that we would've had to walk to WSHS. Center Road, Lee Brooke Pl, ring any bells? Probably shouldn't say anything more...Any particular reason why your kids went to Lake Braddock instead?

Accepted. :) Received my package today.
I actually found myself seriously reading through the material they sent. It's definitely more compelling and interesting than UMW's acceptance mail. Of course I would never solely let the packaging and content of an acceptance letter determine where I go, but it got me thinkging: Is UMW really the obvious choice between the two? GMU does have its advantages. Its proximity to D.C. and diversity are two attributes, among some others, of the college I think very highly of..still, I feel that the UMW acceptance was rather surprising and isn't something I should just toss away. Geez, before I thought I had everything set; acceptance to UMW would easily be taken over one to GMU. Am I overthinking the situation, or am I on to something? I posted something similar to this on the JMU thread for some reason. This is an obvious place to bring up my concern, though hardly anyone shows up here...Any insight, guys?

fhshortie08, received your package yet?

good job halfway.....i got rejected though...

April Fools! lol. i was pretty sure i would get in. they sent me an email, not a package in the mail because they just got my mid year grades on the 29th...yeah i know, kinda late. anyways im most likely going there. its between gmu and odu (i get a full ride)...but gmu is probably gonna win cuz its ..well...not in the city im currently living in :)

UMW is much smaller. if you like traditional campus setting with small campus size (and don't mind seeing same ppl repeatedly) UMW is soo for you. they do have good number of students going to eminent graduate schools. Great academics, but not many opportunities in terms of activities.. Very very cute/pretty campus. Traditional campus setting. If you want city life with so many things going on at the same time, UMW is not for you. Many MANYY girls. Not much diversity. Even student rep. said they don't have racial diversity there. Not much school spirit, but students seem pretty happy. I haven't met any UMW graduate who said they hated there. VERY CHEAP even to outof staters. Great deal :) Terrific school indeed. Interms of reputation.. UMW is def. harder to get into, and has a bit better reputation than GMU. [how do I know? my mentor/co-workers graduated from UMW. I visited too]

GMU.. terrific school with great diversity. Many commute, so you'll have to deal with terrible parking if you plan on driving. Class size is fairly big, but they have novel prize winning professors (economics). They have mall inside of the campus (johnson center) with movie theater. They just built this building for business majors or something.. it is SOO NICE!!! full of new technologies. SO darn neat. Many many things to do since it's 20 min away from DC by metro. Many clubs and fairly ok dorm room.

But gotta watch out for slackers tho. GMU is full of smart students who didn't put much effort in during high school years. [how do I know? I live 20 min away from GMU, visited there so darn many times, my boss graduated there, my best friend goes there]

Both awesome schools, really. But they are very different. I got into both of them, but I decided not to attend after a great deal of thinking. Congrats for all of you who got accepted. Great job!
AIM me if you have any questions :) (blueyou16)

fhshortie08: congrats on the GMU acceptance. You should get away from your hometown of Norfolk and go to GMU, but that's just my opinion. It is a fine school, and as long as you take an active interest in your education there, I'm positive you'll learn a lot and succeed in the future. Good luck!

hhboyji: thanks for the informative descriptions-- even though your help might have made making a decision harder. You've affirmed the characteristics I admire of both schools. I love UMW's campus, close-knit community, and quality of academics; I love GMU's diversity, proximity to D.C., and renown/experienced professors. I never thought it would be this hard...If you had to choose between the two, which would you attend? Should I at least give UMW a shot, and if I don't like it, transfer to GMU or somewhere else sophomore year?

You're going to JMU, right? Have fun there and good luck to you, too!

thanks halfway :). i might transfer somewhere else after a year though.

sorry you're in a rut. i would probably pick gmu due to the opportunities in DC (since you want to do business) and since there is more activities to do in the area. but i guess UMW is a bit academically better? but im not sure, i haven't really looked into the school. good luck with your decision!

I think I'm going to JHU or BU then Cornell (guaranteed transfer). If I get full ride from JMU, then the decision will be harder to make. :P

If I were to choose between UMW or GMU, it'll be UMW just because I live 20 min away from GMU and I don't want to live with my parents.

If not, GMU without a doubt. I want diversity and large student body. Not only that, GMU facilities are awesome, and opportunities are endless with the great location of the school. I can have fun and definitely study hard. UMW is good too.. but just not my type. I only said I'd go to UMW cuz of me living too close to GMU. If I go to UMW, I'll probably transfer.

ppl have different wants/needs. But for me, GMU is better

JHU or BU?!! Wow, I didn't know that. BIG-time congrats on your acceptances to those schools...

how hard do you think it would be for me to transfer to GMU from UMW? i'm leaning towards UMW right now, because, in my opinion, I think it would be foolish of me not to give the school a shot. my acceptance to it was somewhat of a surprise, so, in a way, it's sort of like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity; i don't believe i could get accepted to it again if I tried.

fhshortie08, where would you try to transfer to? JMU? VaTech? and thanks for the link. those were some very interesting and helpful comments.

I've seen many of your posts stating how much you wanted to go to UMW. Well, you got accepted :) I'd say give it a shot. if you don't like it, you can always tranfer to GMU or other school (it's easy to transfer to GMU, believe me)

again, huge congrats on your acceptances. Choosing where to go, in my opinion, is one of the most happiest worries you ever get to have. haha
My AIM is blueyou 16, email>>jay.ahn@gmail.com

Let me know if you have any other questions. From co-wokers to family members, I live around so many ppl with degree from UMW/GMU. I'll be happy to answer any questions :)

Jay

I still haven't made a decision yet, so I'll probalby e-mail you with some more questions sometime soon. Thanks for willingly sharing your knowledge of the schools. I really do appreciate it...and by the way, are you korean? Ahn sounds Korean, but I'm not exactly sure if it is. Just curious, that's all...

Yeppers. I'm Korean indeed :D

Happy to help. Good luck with everything. I'll be happy to answer any questions at any time.

XD

I got this E-mail 2days ago so I think I got Accepted!
BUT today my friend told me that It is a FAKE...
I don't think It's fake
because I haven't hear any rejet/acceptance by Mail yet.

My GPA3.5 SAT 1040

My friend got this E-mail too.
her GPA is 3.0 SAT 950
I think her scores are kind of low for GMU
So I think It's possibly a FAKE one. I hope not....
