I just saw that they only accept about 25 kids so... yeah...

Care to post your stats? thanks.

Care to post your stats? thanks.

care to share yours?

Lol, why are you interested in mine? I'm only a freshman right now, anything can change.

you sound a bit paranoid man. are you applying for this year's transfer round?

next year's

anyway, I go to duke. econ major. high gpa and decent activities. hoping to do something resume-worthy this summer. 30 on the act, retaking it for a 33+.

doesn't sound that promising now that I think about it, but meh, I'll still try.

Take a look at last year's Stanford transfer thread. 1 person got accepted from College Confidential. I think the Stanford Daily also had a piece of a few of Stanford's transfers from last year. It is encouraging to note, though, that they usually try to accept 60-100. It's subject to the Freshman conversion rate, though, and last year I think 22 got accepted.

so the 2% acceptance rate was a one-time thing?

thanks

Yeah...well, not necessarily one-time, but unusual.

I just looked through last year's threads and found no one. :(

Here you go, post #427: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/4161307-post427.html

That's kind of reassuring, though it makes me wonder if it is true or not.

There were 2 people in that thread that did I think, though I don't recall the stats of the other one.

wow.. they only take like 20 people?? I don't see the point of applying. Most will get rejected.

Once again, that was an atypical year.

Actually KGZotU, while it was an atypical year, this year looks to be just as, if not more competitive for transfer space. An email sent to freshman applicants states that they have received about 50,000 2008-2009 applications making it their highest number to date. Just as the high number of applicants did last year (where they only had 47,000), this translates to less space for transfers.

It may very well be the new trend for transfer admissions to Stanford. As an applicant myself I really, sincerely hope that they accept 60-100 but survey says......don't bet on it. :(

Sigh.

I am pretty sure Stanford did not receive 50,000 applicants....

Harvard only received 27,000
Yale 22,000
Columbia 21,000
Princeton 20,000
etc.

The largest private school in US is NYU, and they received about 35,000.

Stanford's acceptance rate stands at ~11%, and I'm pretty sure they didn't accept 5,000 applicants last year.

Class of 2011

Harvard University Ivy

Princeton University Ivy

How can you possibly post something like that?

50000 Applicants?

I think he was talking about a top UC.

But still, I think he's right, that low acceptance rate is here to stay. Every year is only going to get more and more competitive.

The e-mail said nearly 25,000 applicants. Let me quote something I said in another thread:

This is no cause for alarm, guys. I did up a table a few days ago, and this would not be a huge freshman admission number. Here's a little data:

Year........Fr. Applied..Fr. Admit..Tr. Admit 2007-2008....23958....2464......23 2006-2007....22333....2444......72 2005-2006....20195....2426......62 2004-2005....19172....2486......100 2003-2004....18628....2343......101 2002-2003....18599....2368......105

So, then it's just guesses as to how many "nearly 25,000" applications is, and which side of 10% they're going to fall on. Then you have to guess at the conversion rate: how many of those Freshmen will accept Stanford's offer. Then you have to look at how many spots they have open for undergraduates 2008-2009. This e-mail is only a small piece of the picture and doesn't really let us know much.

Hope this helps, Joe

Basically, it doesn't matter how many people apply for freshman admission. They could get 1,000,000 applications, it doesn't matter. What matters is how many they offer admission. If they received nearly 25,000 applications, and they admit around 10%, they could admit the same number as last year...maybe less...maybe more. Not necessarily a bad scenario, because what bollocksed it up last year was a high conversion rate: the number of freshman who accept admission and enroll. Look, they admitted 2486 for 2004-2005, along with 100 transfers. There's a lot at play, and that e-mail doesn't provide data that swings it either way.
