Anyone in Honors College?

DS got the letter today. He's in. The Honors presentation at Chapman Preview Day was great--very inviting and the kids were impressive. This truly makes Chapman a perfect fit (Dodge + Honors) for our son.

Anyone else in?

Any feedback from current students in Honors program?

DS is very pleased and excited about starting in fall.

D is in too and found out just after we got back from accepted students’ day. She is looking forward to the free snacks, and also the lounge. (Oh and to some extent, the opportunity to take smaller more interesting classes!) Her plan is to be a part of a number of different groups at Chapman so she meets a wide variety of kids.

I attended the presentation and liked the kids and the professor too. He seems to have a very calm friendly way about him. Indeed this seems like a wonderful opportunity for this bunch. The admitted students page the kids started lists more of them who are in honors. Looks like a good amount of Dodge kids.

How long did it take after you kid applied to receive their decision? I am still waiting and wondering how long to expect…

Hi Snuggie: Son submitted the app online on 4/30–about a week after Preview Day. He received the acceptance letter yesterday, but we live in OC and pick up mail at a PO Box–that shaves a day or more off delivery time compared to other folks. I think they are doing Honors on a rolling basis until full.
Good luck, it looks like a great program.

Hi - Just wondering, what were the HS stats of those who got into the Honors? I’ve been interested in applying to an Honors college… hm.

Okay great! Thanks for your response Gladiator! It sounds like a great program and I hope to make it!

lullabies:
At Preview Day’s presentation in April, the Honors staff made it clear that people can be accepted with less stellar stats if they show intellectual curiosity, strong interest, excellent writing/analytical abilities (in the app essay), desire for cross-pollination across disciplines and…persistence. One of the students who presented at Preview Day noted that her stats were not high enough to earn an invitation to Honors, but she applied and made a strong case for why she’d be a fit. She was accepted, is highly engaged in the program, and loving it. The prof who oversees the Honors College added, with a smile: “Yes, persistence will be rewarded.”

The cool classes are listed under ‘Honors Courses.’ It also describes how grants can be awarded for special projects proposed by students, or for travel to conferences, etc. Several of the students we’ve met or saw at the Preview Day presentation had projects funded (for thousands of $) or trips covered/subsidized. The program seems to have a lot to offer.

Shakespearefan: our son is also very interested in the lounge, free printing, and the perpetually stocked Honors fridge!

All the best.

Snuggie
I can’t remember exactly when D applied, but it was in April shortly before Preview Day. (She kept not getting around to it…) I don’t know how much comparing HS stats will help since admissions recalculates students’ GPAs on the other side of the looking glass according to a unique Chapmanesque scale. However, they said all kids with Presidential merit scholarships ($25,000 per year) would be asked to apply to the honors program, then they would consider the next lever down with Chancellor’s merit scholarships, ($20,000) and then whomever else applied until they got around 60 students in the program. They also said, if you do not get in freshman year, you can reapply in subsequent years. It sounded like squeaky wheels would definitely get themselves noticed.

Yep – lounge! D is somewhat of an introvert and has never shared a room, so is worried she may a not find a quiet place to escape. Still, she IS used to plenty of ruckus around here!

What happens with their AP credits if they do the Honors Program? Do they actually still coungt for requirements?

Also, is the Honors Program compatible with a potential BFA?

I gather it is because we met senior year digital arts kids (BFA) who were in honors. And DS was accepted to honors with that major, which offers only a BFA.

Someone else can speak more knowledgeably about AP credits…I assumed that those credits worked the same for honors/non honors. Son will be looking into this after HS graduation, but hasn’t gotten that far, yet.
