my son was waitlisted at uva, accepted and deciding between michigan and boston college, in business programs at both, preferred admit at Michigan, what do you think? He's really holding out hope for uva but the program at Michigan is great.

pre-admit at Ross? Wow. Even if he gets in UVA, he should go to Michigan.

Just thought everyone would like to know, since you were all rooting for me, that I was never taken off the wait list(WHATS NEW!!!!). So unfortunately, I have to go University of Maryland at college park, :(. Not particularly the type of academic environment I want to go to, but it's the best one that accepted me.

Don't fret BruinsJew. I got waitlisted by UMich and rejected by UVA last year. I ended up going to Penn State University Park - not particularly the type of academic environment i wanted to go to. However I applied for a transfer and got in UMich...and was waitlisted by UVA!! grr...

I might hear back from UVA next week..fingers crosssed!!

I will be rooting for you MightyNick.

Are you going to be a soph or jr in fall?

I'm thinking of applying to schools even better than UVA as a transfer for sophomore year. I was thinking UPenn, UChicago, NYU, Emory, Northwestern, and this is a longshot, but I would love and be really surprised if I got into Stanford.

Thanks!! I'll be a Sophomore.

NYU isn't better than UVA at all. Have you visited the campus? Apart from the city, I hated it completely.

I visited NYU before, and was thinking of applying this year, but I did not think I had a chance, but then I heard it was not too much harder than Maryland to get in, so I'm kind of disappointed that I did not apply.

I did not visit UPenn or the actual campus of Stanford. But, UPenn, I heard is breathtaking apart from it being in a bad part of Philadelphia, and I love California.

UPenn is in a great section of Philly and it is a great city. More manageable than NY.

Braird,

Thanks for the insight. I hear so many mixed opinions about the locations of these two schools. I guess the best thing is to go look at it myself, before I apply in the middle of freshmen year.

I just checked my status for the first time since I was waitlisted (Im 99% going to Norhtwestern either way) but I noticed my status no longer says wait listed but instead appears as it did before decisions were released...do any of your screens look like this?

BruinsJEW; NYU, NW and Emory are not better than UVa. Good luck at transferring, though I'm sure you'll like CP.

My daughter got her rejection letter today (freshman). She was relieved. We found the whole process long and mystifying. So long UVA and thanks for nothing.

Rejections should not be taken personally... Why the college puts so many on a waitlist - who knows??? Many bright students have also turned down UVA to attend elsewhere.

Hey, Dean J. I just read your blog. Today, a lot of fine students on the waitlist received a letter from Dean Blackburn saying that they can't be admitted because next year's class is "over-subscribed." Yet the posting you put on your blog today says that applicants who missed the May 1 response deadline better hurry up and let the Admissions Office know if they are coming in the Fall. If the class is "over-subscribed," why would the University still be willing to accept students who blew the May 1 deadline? If the class is not "over-subscribed," is Dean Blackburn trying to mislead the students on the wait list as the reason(s) they were rejected for admission?

UPenn is a great school the campus is generally safe but the surrounding area is iffy. Philly is my home town and Penn my alma mater. Can't go wrong with that choice. Friendly people, great education and excellent food. I miss home.

My daughter got waitlisted at UVA and Georgetown, and frankly, they can both GO FISH...she's heading for Johns Hopkins with a big fat scholarship and I could not be more thrilled. UVA is way overrated, in my opinion.

Olivian ,

where's your daughter heading?

LBP,
Yes, rejections should not be taken personally, but it's hard not to when you are 17 years old and you think you have done everything in your power to make something happen. We teach our kids to work hard and good things will happen. Well, that isn't always the way it works in life. Finding that out at 17 is hard because kids are at the developmental stage where the world tends to revolve around them. I tried to tell my daughter that her rejection letters take nothing away from her accomplishments, but she can only think that she's just not smart enough. I tried to tell her there are many even more qualified students who didn't get into the colleges they wanted, either. I think I'll just be quiet now. Time is a great healer.

SportsMama, It is indeed true that many,at that age, take the admission outcome as a reflection of their quality! It is not at all true. I am pretty sure that your daughter is an extremely competent girl and she will do well wherever she studies.

Good luck and good wishes.

received the waitlist rejection today... so long UVA, it woud've been fun
