Anyone received acceptances letters yet?

i was really surprised that i got any merit scholarships at all. i have a 3.8 weighted gpa and pretty low SATs (560M 560CR 660W). since the scholarship (i think) is connected to the dean of the the college i got accepted into (Park), i think it might be because i have so many activities in my school and town TV studio, as well as a lot of experience with running shoots, editing on Final Cut Pro, and a lot of other things that others might not have had. but like i said, i was really surprised i got anything at all.

thanks for yor reply, can you tell me who signed the letter offering you the deans schol. was it the dean of the Park school or was it the admissions office. I would like to know so I know who to write to to inquire if I am going to get anything. Many thanks.

it wasnt the dean of anything, it was the president or something (even though its called a deans scholarship). sorry, i dont know the exact name.

Ndd, if you want to inquire about your aid, call the office of financial aid, they should be able to help you. I belive they send out awards with the acceptance letter - however, it does come in a different envelope...I think? I can't remember anymore. Anyway, call them and ask.

Also, for those of you discussing Syracuse earlier - I chose the IMC degree at Ithaca over a dual degree at Syracuse (I was accepted dual to Newhouse and the School of Management). Of course, scholarships had a little bit to do with it, but in the end I have been so happy. I've been able to do anything and everything I wanted at Ithaca my first year here. I have been on the radio station, I've acted on television and I've written for student publications - all of these things award-winning. In the meantime I have heard students say (some from experience) that Syracuse does not let you touch a camera until your Junior year - not to mention the fact that their television station was suspended indefinitely (I believe it still is...) for airing obscene content - some of which I've had a chance to see and it is truly disgusting and something I would be very embarrassed of if I went to school there.

Just thought I'd add a little insight...

What did they do on the television that was so bad?

I visited both Syracuse and Ithaca for communications. I was accepted into Ithaca's but not into Newhouse. I'm probably going to go to Syracuse though (accepted into Whitman management), major in management for the first year and then add on communications as well after a year. The first thing that I noticed about Ithaca was that it is always comparing itself to Newhouse, like it is overshadowed or something. Rather than stating why I should go to Ithaca, I've heard more negativity about other places. I think Ithaca is more technical (if you want to be a camera man, etc.). Regarding Syracuse's main television station, it was not shut down. Its other and newer cable station was suspended though for having offensive material (It has two stations).

Actually, Ithaca is not more "technical" as you put it...it is very PRODUCTION oriented. But to be able to produce something, it is important to UNDERSTAND technical aspects. And no we do not put down other schools...we simply say that we do offer hands-on experience IMMEDIATELY which does set us apart from other schools. However, it is true that no school is right for everyone, and if Syracuse is what makes you feel comfortable and good, then that's great! However, don't insinuate that Ithaca is not a good institution, because it definitely is!

On the previous comment of what was so bad, Syracuse's television show had a lot of racial jokes (and they weren't funny - they were just crude), they mocked their school president, and frequently referred to drinking/freshman/sex in a crude manner. I have seen clips from the show. I believe you can download them from a website - I don't know which though. You may be able to find it if you search for it.

Wow! I just love reading your posts about Ithaca. You are a Journalism major, right? Yet you were able to participate in all these activities, not directly connected to your major? That is SO cool!!! Is that very typical of Ithaca students?

Yes, anyone can participate in ANY activities. You don't even have to be a communications major to get involved. You just need to watch for announcements about auditions and information sessions - or you can contact the editors, station managers, and directors directly and ask to help/learn/participate. I am now officially an IMC major, but I was a Journalism major to begin.

It is easy for students to participate in these activities and therefore, many students DO take advantage of them...and as I said before...these are award-winning media!

I've been told that it's pretty difficult to get cast in a theatre production if your not a Theatre major, or at least a minor. I don't know if you have any experience in that field, but what are your thoughts? Does the same apply to the television acting you referred to? Is that done by the Park School or the Theatre department, or is it a collaboration? What type of programming appears on ICTV (is that right?)? Thank you so much!

It is VERY difficult to get into theatre productions if you are not a theatre majors. It does make sense that directors would favor those students over others, because they are spending their college education trying to become actors and focusing on that...

However, ICTV is a different story. Theatre majors don't usually audition for those shows. Also, there are many student film projects to act in...especially if you are a TV-R or Cine-Prod major, they basically use people in their classes as talent. Some things you have to audition for, some you just get asked to participate in.

However, there is plenty to do. And, a kid I know that goes to IC even made a website that is dedicated to helping film, tv, and comm. people network and find out about auditions.

Thanks for the info! I am planning on minoring in Theatre while majoring in C&P. I will definitely keep in mind what you said about the theatre productions.

What kind of stuff appears on ICTV? Is it all like documentary, news-type stuff, or are there like actual television shows created by students? I know nothing about college stations, so this is all new to me! :-)

TheatreChic - did you have to audition for a minor in theatre? are u planning to get a BA or a BFA in it?

I haven't had to officially declare a minor yet, but I don't believe an audition is required for a theatre minor. So, no, I haven't auditioned. :-)

I'm actually planning on getting a BS in Cinema & Photography (a major from the Park School of Communications), not a BA or BFA.

As we approach the 4/1 deadline for mailing decisions, I'm curious to know if there are any music applicants (particularly voice majors) who have heard from Ithaca.

whoa i just got my acceptance and im pretty suprised i got in

Accepted. BA in Drama.

Accepted into Journalism program.

Still waiting to hear about acceptance for my son. They said all decisions to be mailed by April 15 and his was still under final review. Is this a good sign that it is taking so long? He applied late Jan. Thanks for any input!
