AP as an International Student

Hey I am currently in class 12 and wanted to give the AP exams? I missed the deadline by 4 days- but have a valid reason for that, my internet connection was down for 2 whole weeks!

what am i to do? can somebody guide me ? I have sent the college board an email regarding the same.

hmm if you’re willing to pay the late fee (40$) and take the AP you can contact the AP centres… if you’re in delhi contact USIEF

usief??? could u send me a link or something?

another thing, how different is AP form the regualr CBSE syllabus??( PCM?)

Does AP help in getting admission?

yes, AP helps in getting admission. it shows the adcoms that you have taken challenging courses in high school

APs are different than CBSE, but not that difficult. It is easier than CBSE but method is different.

How will it help if I give them next year or something?

It’s too late to start studying for them now…

@chikoo how do u give them?

it helps for admission if u give APs at the end of 9th, 10th or 11th grade. For credits and saving money u can take them even after 12th before going to US.

as i have already said, i took 2 APs in physics C after my 9th grade at Ahmedabad international school and i will be giving 2 more - AP calc BC and AP BIO this May at Cathedral school mumbai.

Prepared from AP books and a ref. book
it is not at all difficult if u r good at self study

hey chikoo could you suggest any AP books to study from(physics B)?.. btw nikhil you’re in 11th right…
[United States-India Educational Foundation :: Fulbright Commission in India :: Fulbright Fellowships for Indian and U.S. Nationals :: Free and Authentic Information on U.S. Higher Education](<a href=“:: Welcome to USIEF ::”>http://www.usief.org.in/) this is the usief site…you can take them if they are in december or next year… there might be quite a lot of things you have not studied yet in the physics AP…look up the syllabi on collegeboard

Here you go.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/ap-tests-preparation/201793-consolidated-book-suggestions-ap.html</a></p>

@akshay, i contacted them but to know avail! The deadlines over, I think I;ll give them in December then! but the thing is how will i report my scores to colleges? coz i’ll be applying in oct-nov.

so it wont really help in my admission decision, it’ll probably just help later on in college, right?

oh u report them whenever the results come out…u tell them uve given these tests after self-studying and report them the grades when they come out… i dont really know when those come out but they should before the admission decision is made

@AkshayM
Princeton reveiw for both physics B and c are good for AP. i studied from that and Resnick Halliday for Physics as a ref book

@nkhlgeorge
you can show the APs as your senior year work load for admission though it will be without grades. The results are acailable on phone with a charge of 8$ on phone in first week of July so they won’t be available before your decisions are made. But they can still be useful for credits and there by saving money

thanks… i guess i’ll go for PR over barrons

Nikhil,
Taking AP will not boost your chances for admission.
Look at it that way , AP will make the admitting commitee treat you as any regular US student. However if you apply just like that they treat you as a proper naive international(which is a good thing).Adding up too many reports, results can prove to be disadvantageous in your app. It makes you look like any other desperate student.
My advice: No AP’s for you, SAT i &ii along with TOEFL will dothe trick.

I am new to CC and have been following this forum for past month …

I am seeking advice for my daughter who attends 9th grade at a CBSE school.

When is the best time to take SAT subject tests ? Is all the syllabus required for SAT subject test covered by the end of 11th grade ?

This question is for the 2014 batch, how many of you took the AP exams ?

Thanks in advance

hey! weel the SAT physics test contains chapters covered in class 12, if ur daughter can manage to read through them( u dont need real in depth knowledge for the subject test) she will do just fine if she gives them in May or june(of the year she passes out from the 11th-2013 i guess) for the AP’s you will have to contact the nearest international school that offers them, to register as a private candidate. the AP exam is tougher than the SATII, so she may need some prep for that(esp calculus, which is covered in class 12)

hope this helped! good luck!

^Thanks ! Helps me understand the time line of things to come/plan …

With regards to AP, I am trying to understand if AP scores will help my daughter’s application considering that she attends CBSE schools after reading the message from @IndianAspirant ? Hence the question, if anybody from the batch of 2014 took the AP’s and felt it helped them get into good schools?

I’d advise your daughter to opt for IB for the 11th and 12th. Its somewhat like AP and she might earn advanced credit as well… If she does well in ib, it will boost her chances of admission at an ivy or universities in the same ballpark.
