I'm currently taking honors Chem as a sophomore and I'm looking to take either AP Chem or AP Bio next year. Is Chem easier than Bio? I'm probably going to be taking one junior year and the other one senior year. Is the course load the same for each one?

Depends on your particular strengths/weaknesses.

AP Chem is more math-intensive, while AP Bio is mainly memorization.

Since you will have already taken honors chem, I’d say AP chem would be easier for you than AP bio. But like the above poster said, AP bio is really just memorization.

Take AP chem. It’s more of an application of knowledge than memorization and I find it way more useful than biology!

Chemistry is my best subject (5 on the AP & 800 on the SAT II) so I loved AP Chemistry. I found chemistry to be significantly easier and more enjoyable than bio.

You should look at it from a different perspective. IMO, the only reason to take ap exams is to get the college credit. What you should do is check with your future college to see what credit they are willing to give you for certain exams. If you don’t get credit for AP bio, why take the exam? You see what I am saying here. Likewise, if ap bio and chem qualify you to satisfy the same requirement, why take both exams?

In high school I made the mistake of not looking into those types of things so about 25% of the exams I took didn’t get me any credit at all simply because the college doesn’t give any credit for those exams. Don’t make the same mistake I did!

Bio will take up a lot of your time. If you’re planning on taking 5 other AP’s (and I don’t doubt that you are) it probably won’t work out for you. However, in my opinion it is much more interesting than Chem.

Chem does not take as much time. If you’re good at math, go for it. I know too many Juniors who struggle/d with Bio.

For another opinion, I much prefer bio. It’s a lot of memorization, but the information just seems more interesting than that of chemistry. A lot of biology is just common sense, anyway. It didn’t feel like that in chemistry for me.

Biology is definetely not more common sense than chemistry seeing that in chemistry once you have a concept ( which is common sense anyway) you can use it for anything in chemistry whereas in biology there arent many patterns and you have to learn everything that is in the curriculum, some of which isnt common sense.

Take AP Chem you wont regret it.

^ You might regret it. :P

I’m probably going to be faced with the same predicament for next year [senior yr]. I’m taking Physics B this year and it’s horrible, so I can’t wait to get out of this type of science! I think I like chem better than bio, so I might go with AP chem

I second that.

AP Chem FTW!!!

I’m taking ap Bio this year, and yes it is definitely a lot of memorization but logic plays into it a lot and the material itself is fascinating. I’m so glad I didn’t take chem!

I say you take AP Chemistry next year, since you already have some knowledge on the subject it will make the class soo much easier. I took AP chemistry as a junior right after i took Pre-AP chemistry sophomore year. i noticed that most of the seniors in my AP Chem class were struggling because they forgot the simple chem concepts while i did not have a problem with it.

I am taking AP Bio right now and we’ll see how that goes

I’m taking both AP bio and AP physics c this year, and I have to say, Bio is LAMEE. It’s way too repetitive in my opinion and yeah, unless you want to major in biology or something in college I dont see the point of taking it. And since you have no intention of getting into physics, chem will have to do.

final verdict: ap chem
