I'm a junior and just met with my hs counselor and she suggested I might not want to "waste my time with BC Calc because most colleges will make you take Calculus again anyway" and take AP Stats instead. I think this is horrible advice. Don't selective colleges want to see you take the most challenging courses available (assuming you can be successful in them)?
I think my counselor is whack, right?

Whack.

Colleges will want to see you take the most rigorous courses you can, and that means Calculus. Take CalBC to help your admissions position.

Plus, if you are going to be a STEM major or even a math heavy Econ major, you need some Calculus. Take some now. It will make those later Physics and Econ classes easier. Even if you have to retake some Calculus, take it in high school. College Calculus moves fast and the teachers are not always the best. If you go in with some background, it can only help you.

Definately take BC instead of Stat. Stat is so much easier, and the colleges know it. Hardest courses is what they look for.

You may want to take both of them

Dad is right, take both if they fit. If you are good in math, Stat should be an easy A for you, and Bc may be a challenge, but it is two AP’s. My son actually took AP stat sophomore year and said it was a breeze.

Actually, I recommend you to take Calc and self-study for Stats. That’s what I did.

Thanks for the comments. I’m going to take both if I can fit them in my schedule. If not I’ll self study for stats.

To my knowledge, the AP credit for AP Calculus BC is accepted at most colleges in the country.
Like everyone before me has said, take Calc BC if you can.

Can you take both? That looks the most rigorous and what I’m currently doing.

Your counselor is awfully wrong. Calc BC is far more important, especially since Calc II is a weeder class in college. Even if you retake calculus, you’ll be better prepared and less likely to get weeded out. I took Calc BC as a junior and am taking AP Stats now (hopefully can take Calc III spring semester); AP Stats is absurdly easy.

If you take Calc BC without AB, you’ll have a harder time, but it’s completely worth it. You’ll have to take the Calc AB Subscore part of the exam, but who cares? You could get two college math credits in high school. Take Calc BC. Take AP Stats, too, but Calc BC is so much better.

I also agree, take Calc BC. If you get a high score on BC, you shouldn’t be required to retake the course in college. Even if the school doesn’t take BC credit, you should be able to test out of it.

I finished AP BC last year and have always mades A’s in math. My AP Stats teacher is insane. No one has an A in the class. She counts everything wrong if you don’t write it exactly as it is in her head…

@Hihohihoitsoff I’ve had math classes in HS (and currently now in college) where I got 0 points on a problem that I think I deserved credit on or was graded too harshly, then realized later I legitimately had a faulty solution somewhere. You’re not exaggerating it, are you, or is that actually true?
