AP English and AP LIT: Both necessary?

My S took ap Lit last year and passed the AP exam. This year he is taking AP English and we have to decide by Friday whether to take the AP exam for this also.

So, is it necessary to have 2 AP exams completed for English/Literature? Does it really help in college to get excused from certain English classes? For example, will 2 AP exams passed will he get more credits, or will they only allow one?

He is applying to CSU and UC schools.

Thanks!

I don’t know about CSU and UC schools, but my son found no schools that were going to give him credit for both AP English courses.

I checked the websites for both Cal & UCLA, and they cap the English credits, so only credit for one.

You don’t need to take them both, but Lit is more difficult than Language. check your target schools to see what score thay will accept, “Pass” may not be enough - some schools want 4s or even 5s. It depends on the English department at each school.

Why not just take the exam? Doesn’t really require any prep outside of class. Might as well take it. There’s a chance his Lang score may not get him credit (if it’s a 3).

Extremely unlikely (aka impossible) he’ll earn two credits of English, even with two 5s, though from my understanding, sometimes universities will only allow Lang to give one semester of credit, and Lit would account for the second semester.

Either way, why not just use the opportunity and take the exam!

Thanks to all replies!

Each exam is $90, and we could sure use that for something else, so just wanted to check.
