Hey guys,
This may seem like a silly question but I have a choice to make this year about my English class. I can either take AP English Language and Composition or Honors English 11. I understand colleges like to see you challenge yourself and take more rigorous courses and hence they would expect me to take AP. HOWEVER, I barely got an A in Honors English this year. AP and honors is weighted the same at my school and so getting an A in honors affects my GPA in the same way as getting an A in AP. I have heard that the AP teacher is really difficult and few students receive A's. I feel that I am not so strong at English and that I have a significantly greater chance of getting an A in Honor's English. Getting a B in AP, would hurt my GPA and would show as a B on my transcript which could discourage colleges from accepting me. If I take Honor's English, I can retain my GPA, but if I avoid AP English when I had the option, colleges may look down upon me. What do you recommend I do? Is it better to take a challenge and risk hurting my GPA or should I maintain my GPA and go into Honor's? I need to inform my guidance counselor very soon! Thank you for taking the time to read this and please don't hesitate to give any comments.
Once again thanks.

Im taking honors english along with 2 other honors classes and 7 AP’s. I dont think colleges will “look down” upon anyone. As long as you challenge yourself with other classes, you should be fine.

^ I agree, if they weigh the same, then go with the class you feel more comfortable with.

“I barely got an A in Honors”.
If you got an A- in honors, you can very well pull of an A-/A by working extra hard in an AP class. It’s a tough class, but if you truly want to try your best, and with the effort–you can do it.
If you got a B or below in Honors, I suggest not doing AP just because of the intensity and rigor of it, in comparison to an Honors class.
Best of luck!

Take classes that you are actually interested in. It seems like you dont seem to care much about english and in that case just take honors. I hate english so I just decided to stick with honors.

thanks guys any more input?

Wow, I’m in the same situation as you. But I suggest talking with your counselor(s) to see which best fits you. And also, if possible, look at your previous work and tests from your previous Honors English class and see if you actually understood it very well or not. And also if you are not comfortable with timed tests on writing essays and reading comprehension, I suggest Honors English 11.

If you like English, writing and analyzing rhetoric, take AP. If you don’t, take Honors.

what is your input on colleges and their opinion. I am not trying to avoid challenges or AP’s. My schedule for this year consists of AP Calc BC, AP US HISTORY, AP LATIN, AP BIOLOGY, Honor’s Physics and then I have to decide for english. I mean there is an evident challenge for a weak english guy to take AP but how would that impact me? Like what will the colleges think if I back out? Would they value the challenge?

colleges will be like “oh look, another asian tryhard” and put you on the rejection list along with the other 60000 people.

^

Lol at that comment.

lol @JHUorDuke… but like have any of you been in such a predicament before?

any other suggestions?

After taking AP English III, I feel like my essay writing skills increased dramatically. Now, taking the AP test is kind of pointless IMO (most schools don’t even give any real credit for it) since you basically do a SAT CR section on steroids and write essays with little time to prepare - Because, in college you’re definitely going to have to write a university-grade paper in under 45 minutes.

I would still take it though.

wait what is AP English III?

AP English III is Language and composition, it’s just what we call it around my area, Freshman English is I, Sophomore is II, etc. It’s much easier to say AP III than AP Language and composition.

i feel inclined towards AP now but I still don’t feel confident about how I will perform in the class. Can anyone give input on how colleges might view this? Any personal experiences?

At my school, AP Lang is probably easier than honors english.

It seems like you’re more comfortable with taking Honors English. In that case, go for it. Besides, you have some AP classes already, so not taking one more AP class will not hurt you.
If you’d like a challenge, take AP English. You could possibly prepare over the summer for AP English if you feel that you need to.

ok thanks guys also how hard is the actual test?
