Is this the case with most students who submit the application a few days prior to or on the day of the deadline? No chance at all?

basically yes. unless you have a 4.0/34+.

Any school with a rolling admissions set-up will have fewer open spaces as the deadline approaches -- the earlier you apply, the better your chances are. Applying late does not mean instant rejection, but it is very, very difficult to get in unless you are an extremely strong candidate.

Agreed with blackpen.

omg?/? for reals?!!!...??

I really don't think applying late=instant rejection.
Of course you will have less chance, seeing thousands of qualified students applying wayyyy before the deadline, but you can still get accepted.
At least your app will be reviewed...

If it makes oyu feel any better i just finished my app too. Also think of it this way, they'll look at us before most of the deferals and a decent bit of them get in so no worries, you still have a shot. Hopefully my 33 act will carry me in. Thats what I get for procrastinating on the essays.

Several years ago, my friend with 4.0 (valedictorian) and 1500+ was rejected, even though she was in state and it was her back up school. And she was accepted by several Ivies and now attends Columbia.

Yeah, several kids last year at my school got into Stanford but were rejected at Michigan because they applied too late.

Last year's valedictorian at d's HS - which is in-state - had a 4+ GPA. Got into Notre Dame. He decided relatively late to apply to Umich and was rejected.

You may get wait listed instead of rejected. I know last year, many strong applicants that applied in late December or a little later were already being wait listed.

Agreed, you will most likely be waitlisted, which was the case last year with many late applicants. Better late than never, though.

Last year was abnormal as it was the first year U-M implemented Early Response. Prior to that, I know quite a number of students applying right before the deadline and still were admitted.

I applied Jan 17 and was accepted on Feb 5 to the engineering school. I'm out of state, MD, and my stats aren't all that exceptional.
A decent amount of APs/honors, 4.0 GPA, Track/XC three years, few clubs and honors. Nothing special.

And is it rare to get accepted this early applying so late, even if it's rolling admission?

Wow that surprising you got in applying this late into Michigan.

No I wouldn't say it's rare to get accepted into top universities applying this late.

you got a 4.0. that's special.

xc2009, I am very surprised you got in this late. Congrats, though.

thanks for giving me hope! =]

i have a question - does mich really look at applications in the order that they were received? because some of you applied jan. 16th, and heard back already... and i know people who have been waiting for months...
