I've just recently heard of Carleton and realized it's basically my dream school. I know the application deadline has passed, but is there any chance of being considered if I apply now? And would that be too much undue pressure on my counselor, who would have to get together recommendations again, and my mom, who would have to do more financial aid stuff? I know my mom would be angry if I suggested it, because I already applied to 11 schools, but I really like Carleton.

Call the admission office immediately to see if they will consider a late application.

For the financial aid part, Carleton does not require its own form. You only need to submit FAFASA & CSS Profile. You probably have filed both to the 11 schools you applied. Just go to your account and add Carleton on the list of schools if Carleton will consider late application.

Yes, all you can really do is call and ask.

Called, and was told to go ahead and apply. Thanks! I’ll just hope that it won’t make too much of a difference in how they perceive my application.

Thanks for considering Carleton, NemesisNyx! :-)

I applied, and I can very honestly say that Carleton is my top choice right now and Inwould certainly attend if accepted. But I’m very worried about my chances. The website says “In some years, the College is able to offer admission to late applicants; in other years, the first-year student class may be filled and students to whom we would like to offer admission must be placed on a waiting list to see if vacancies occur in late spring or early summer.” Does anybody know what the chances of this happening are? I feel like Inwould have a very decent shot at being accepted if it wasn’t for applying a month late. Would more demonstrated interest – that is, making it clear that they’re my top choice – make any difference?

Sorry, I’m just freaking out a little because the more I learn about Carleton, the more I love it, and I’m really worried now!

Don’t worry. It doesn’t take admissions officers a long time to come up with a decision for your application unless you’re a borderline applicant (which too takes only 1 hour max?). Of course, the competition of the applicant pool makes a difference, haha, but yeah, you should reaffirm strong interest by communicating with them It could potentially mean a bump from a waitlist to accept.

I’m not as worried about their decision based on the merit of my application itself; I’m jus worried that even if I am good enough to get in, there will be no room for me and I’ll be waitlisted anyways. They could easily fill the class with applicants who are just as qualified as me AND applied by the deadline, so I need find some way to convince them to accept me instead (or in addition.)

NemesisNyx,
Do not dwell on your worries. From Jan. 15 to Feb. 15, the admission staff probably were busy working on the ED II applications as their priority. They might have started sorting out the RD applicants but I don’t think they were able to decide who would be admitted before they went through all applications. I doubt that they could finish reading thousands of appications carefully before the time you turned in your application. Your worry would be reasonable in the case of rolling admission but Carleton is not a school with rolling admission. Since they acceptted your late application, they will surely consider it as they do with other RD applicants. So you can relax. You can choose to rejoice in hope and wait patiently instead of bothering yourself by the dealine issue that may not cause any negative consequence.

anyone know when Carleton will announce their RD acceptances?

Last year someone on CC said they heard on 3/25 (earliest date).

The website says 1st April, but who knows?? Do they email or is it all post??

Okay, I went back and dug through the old threads again. It looks like most notification is by snail mail (“big white envelope”). Maybe the email above was an international student? Not sure… ED this year also was notified via “big white envelopes”.

The earliest envelope recieved last year that was posted appeared to be on 3/22, and it was a Minnesota student who received it. So they probably mailed a day or two before that. The 22nd was a Thursday.

No telling this year, but I guess I would start watching the mailbox around March 21 (same Thursday as last year). Good luck to everyone!

Well I’m an international student so I’ll probably have to wait a little longer anyway :’)

Date of first reported Carleton decision on CC (usually by a MN poster)

2012 Mar 22
2011 Mar 23
2010 Mar 20
2009 Mar 21
2008 Mar 22

Just wondering- Does Carleton have a student portal where we can access our application process and materials required?
If there is one, I have yet to received mine. I applied for RD earlier this year.

I received an email from Carleton on the 16th of January with information on how to access the student portal to check for required material. I would check your junk or spam mail to see if the email accidentally went in there. If its not in there, I would email or call the admissions office.

Here is the application status login:

but you’ll need to set up a password for it. Emails about this were sent in January (as IBinLux indicates). If you can’t find this email I suggest contacting Carleton Admissions.

That’s one disadvantage to applying in February – I never received that link! Thanks, Descartesz. =)

Honestly, though, does anybody with any experience with Carleton admissions know if sending in an extra essay or some other supplemental material would help my application? I called admissions and I was told to go ahead and send something if I feel like it, but I don’t know if it would actually make any difference at this point.
