Applying to Barrett Honors Statistics C/O 2022

Hi, I really think Barrett Honors is the perfect school for me in terms of location, weather, education, class size, and everything else. I applied for the EA pool on Nov 1, 2020. Just wanted to know the stats of others who applied this year.

Here are my stats:
GPA: 3.87 (unweighted)
AP Classes: 6 (2 junior year, 4 senior year)
AP Tests: 8 (got 2 5s and 2 4s last year, and will be taking 4 this year)
Ranking: N/A
ACT/SAT: didn’t report (all got canceled in Bay Area)
ECs: have about 10 with 6 good ones
Essay: good

Btw, I got accepted into ASU as a Biochemistry Major, which will also be my major at Barrett.

If interested, please share your stats

I can’t tell you about this year, but my daughter is a freshman and enjoying it.

Here are her stats:
GPA: 3.7 (unweighted), 4.2 (weighted)
AP Classes: 7 (1 sophomore year, 3 junior year, 3 senior year)
Ranking: Top 10%
ACT/SAT: 33 ACT, 34 Superscore (don’t Superscore though)
ECs: Varsity Lacrosse starter, 5-6 other ECs
Essay: good

They don’t care about your AP Test Scores.

Hope this helps.

Barrett is definitely one of my top schools, if not the top one, so I’m happy to see a thread about it!

Stats:
GPA: 4.45 Weighted (my school’s out of a 4.5 scale)
AP’s: (APUSH (5) and Physics 1 (3) junior year, French and Calc AB this year)
ACT: 32, but Barrett is test blind anyway
EC’S: Had about 7 or 8 solid ones (including work, club, volunteer) and some more “one time” things, also a few awards, mostly poetry or school ones
Essay: Pretty good
Rec’s: Great

Also a male from MO, but don’t know if that has any bearing on anything. Already got accepted into ASU Fulton Engineering school (Prof. Flight) at Poly.

Just about a month out from EA decisions!

While Barrett is separate in many ways, academically you will be part of the larger ASU and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) where Biochemistry is based. If they are still set up the same way, they CLAS advisors will help you with Freshman scheduling. They have several “blocks” so that like majors from Barrett go through some of the general Ed classes together and have Human Event together.

You sound like a great Barrett candidate. I am on my second DS going through Barrett. He is a Junior CS major. My older DS was a Chem major.

AP classes may not matter for admission, but they are huge for credits. You may be able to get up to 30 credits for the 4s and 5s you received. My DS will graduate early because of all the AP credits.

My son applied early to Barrett and his stats are definitely on the low side. He has a 3.5 unweighted gpa. His application is strong other than that- essay, LORs, ECs showing passion for his major. We are planning on him getting rejected and then appealing the decision so that we can add his SAT and first semester senior grades. All he wants to do is go to ASU and be a part of Barrett. We live in Georgia by the way. Good luck to everyone- 15 more days until decision.

Son applied to Barrett as well.
4.0uw/4.4 weighted gpa
No SAT/ACT
Athlete/volunteer/Bilingual certificate
Accepted to WP Carey for Finance
Sister is at ASU in nursing program.
He has also been accepted to UofA and into their honors program
Hope he gets into Barrett!

EA decisions out this Friday… good luck to everyone! Not sure if there’s a specific time that they’re releasing them, but I know that when they opened their application it was at 5 PM AZ time… so maybe the same now?

Just curious, why do people consider honors colleges instead of “good” public or private schools?

What do you consider “good” vs “not good”?

Honors programs come with perks like priority registration, opportunity to take smaller honors sections of courses, special programs, dedicated advisors, and often better dorms.

Sometimes you have to scratch beneath the surface to find the right fit.

ASU has fairly decently ranked engineering programs for example (much higher than overall university rank), so if student is interested in engineering then ASU is a good option and adding on Barrett provides extra perks.

Some kids want to attend a big state school. In some cases their in-state high ranked public may not be a good fit. Not everyone can afford private or OSS tuition at a top public where they will not receive much or any FA, so apply to state schools that offer good OSS merit $ and then apply for Honors.

Personally, I actually don’t really like the big state school atmosphere, but I know I can get that private school feeling in Barrett. I actually don’t really think of it as much applying to a public honors program even though it is; all of my other applications were to private schools. There were just so many things about Barrett that I loved, from the location type of students there. The main thing that sold it to me was that, as someone who’s considering pursuing a professional flight career, I can do that at a school like ASU (as opposed to a strict engineering/flying college) and be able to take “normal” classes, while also having people who have the same drive to learn as I do in Barrett.

@medstud101 - to the other replies I would add not all “Honors” programs are the same. At UCLA for example, the Honors program is more of a student organization with some academic backing. It is not a separate school.

ASU pushes their Honors program as one of the few to require a thesis to graduate with the “Honors College” distinction on your transcript. With that, there is a research and travel budget. My DS did his thesis on the Professional Video Gaming, is it viable or a fad. As part of that, he presented at a conference in San Diego. The trip was paid for with Barrett funds.

I echo the other aspects mentioned - priority registration, dedicated advisors, dedicated dorms. The other big draw to ASU was the ability to graduate in 4 years. In CA, many CS and UC schools are so impacted that 5 years is the norm. I also like the number of AP credits ASU is willing give.
