I currently go to a community college and unfortunately will not be able to get my Associate's degree until Fall 2011. I've become really anxious to leave home though, I want to get away but it's not essential. I want to try to apply to the state school I want to go to for Fall 2011. I currently have a 3.5 gpa and 35 credits. I want to apply as a math major and they require for admission for transfers Calculus 1 and 2 with at least a C. I have taken Calc 1 and got an A, but I'm taken Calc 2 this semester....that's not a problem right? Anyway, I'm wondering if it is better just to wait to get my AA?? If I apply for Fall 2011 and get rejected could I just go get my AA and apply again for Spring 2012?? Would I have a better chance? If I do get accepted for Fall 2011 could I stay at my community college if I wanted for another semester and finish my AA and then go there in the Spring? Or would I have to apply again for the Spring 2012 even if I did get accepted Fall 2011?? Sorry for all the questions, I just don't want to regret anything. Thanks!

Your best course of action is to have a good appt with your school’s Transfer Advisor – the person specifically charged to help you plot your next actions. He/She will also be the most familiar with local colleges and their requirements. Best of luck to you.

thanks, I understand that but I really just wanted some advice… I want to figure this out quick…whether to apply for the fall or just wait. I need to start the application if I want to apply… I have talked to an admissions counselor before but honestly they weren’t much help. They were just like, “It’s your decision!!” I would talk to them again but the school is over a hundred miles away and I can’t get down there very soon. But I guess I’ll just have to wait or maybe they can talk to me on the phone…

Everyone always says to talk to the transfer counselor at the school. Not all CCs have such a thing. Mine doesn’t. You are on your own.

I am in an incredibly similar situation. I don’t know what your state is or anything but in my experience state schools will definitely favor AA applicants. One of my state flagships will not admit a transfer with fewer 60 hours, the other one will. Both say they prefer AA applicants. If you apply for Fall you usually can also apply for spring. But… if you get in for Fall and choose not to go I don’t think you’ll be able to defer enrollment to spring. That means you’ll have to do the whole application process again.

I am applying to transfer schools, including one of the state state flagships, for Fall 2011 even though, like you, I wouldn’t get my AA until December. I figure if it doesn’t work out I’ll just get the AA and go to the better flagship next Spring. It’s respectable but my first choice is to transfer in the fall regardless of the extra difficulty.

Something else you need to consider is that applying before you get your AA will likely cause the state school to want your HS info. Whether you did well or not will affect your chances of admission.

Thanks, notaclue. It’s nice to hear someone is in a similar situation! I do think that schools here also prefer transfer students who have their Associate’s. I just figure that if they reject me that I’ll just apply again in the Spring with my AA an have a better chance… Plus I don’t think they will look at my high school stuff, even though I did not do bad. They say on the website they only look at your ACT scores/high school transcript if you have fewer than 20 credits or something like that. Again, thanks a lot for replying. I think I will just apply for Fall 2011 and hope for the best!!

Good luck to you!
