Thanks for sharing - loved it! @bridgenail Good advice re: IU, as well!
Well, it’s been a crazy week for my vocal performance mezzo negotiating with Mannes and CIM, but in the end, Hartt School of Music won out! Very excited!
Congrats @yourmama99 and D!
@BassTheatreMom Put down that deposit before he has a chance to change his mind! Congrats!
@bridgenail I love it! I am going to do my best to to avoid buyer’s remorse and jump right into the phase 2: partying. My D, a junior, is taking her SAT next weekend and working on her college list right now, so I have to hurry and celebrate before the crazy starts all over again.
It’s so exciting to see all the decisions rolling in. It’s sad that this is “confidential” beause I would love to see all these kids’ names in lights someday and know that I went through this with their parents.
Congratulations to all of you!
@bridgenail - thanks for the link. I feel so quiet now. I logged everything as it happened, so not much reflection to offer, and I don’t see any cases on the forum that I think I have the perfect advice to put out there. S seems to be doing a nice mix of composing, playing, practicing, and such. Parents (us) have estimated how much stuff S can take with us in our car. Parents are thinking how many days to hang around for orientation days, mostly to serve as gophers of household supplies while S follows the orientation program. Parents are thinking about how they will reshape their schedules with the empty nest.
@bridgenail That was awesome! After all this, I needed a good laugh! Love the title…that was quite the must-have book when we were all pregnant.
Haven’t posted in a while but still read every post on the music major forum. Just wanted to congratulation everyone on their final acceptances (and surviving the process). @MidwestMom17 and @beaglemom mom, please PM me if you have any Jacobs/IU/Bloomington questions. My son has just completed his junior year at Jacobs (violin performance).
@whyyesheisabass That and the Girlfriends’ Guide. Except in the applying to college edition, you get to drink way wine than you did in the pregnancy edition.
@BCVIOLINMOM Thank you so much!
@BCVIOLINMOM Thanks. To other IU parents - thanks! My S is quite excited. We head to IU for spring orientation in mid-June (my first visit to Bloomington). I did get a hotel for those dates, but forget it for move in and parents weekend (and I was not paying $600 a night for Spring Hill Suites in Bloomington - sorry not meant to offend, but…LOL). We are driving out to IU for orientation so will stop about an hour out, get him set up and leave. Then for Parent weekend we are using AirBNB for the first time :). Hope it works out. I wish we had done all this sooner, but the final decision was not made until last week. I think the kids are on a FB page for IU students. At some point I will probably stop checking CC, but feel free to always PM with questions. Our path to music was a bit more circuitous than for others. Thanks to everyone for all your input!
I am so relieved that the waiting and worrying and weighing are over. My child ended up at their top-choice school, so we have a happy musician.
I just wanted to pop in to say thanks to everyone offering advice, community, and support on here. Enjoy your May Margaritas!
Awesome! Congrats that it came out great, and best wishes for your child’s future! And depending on your kid and his path, you may face this again in 4 years, albeit perhaps in different form:)
Or crazier yet in 5-6 as you fret about their going out into the world. Yikes. I long for the days of stressing about admissions and what program and teacher. Scary to think my musician is going out into the world. Hoping he can find a way to make it all work…
yay @unscripted - enjoy that May margarita! @StacJip good luck to your son out in the real world!
Anyone else dealing with a major attack of senioritis? We have over a month left of school and my senior’s brain has already checked out! Forgetting to turn in assignments seems to be the biggest issue at the moment (even if they are completed!). He has always been a conscientious student so it’s so unliike him. I think the mental energy has shifted to the new girlfriend. AP exams are done, thank goodness.
@classicalsaxmom lol! I think the problem may not be senioritis, it may actually just be the awesome new girlfriend and change in weather ;). Mine still has AP tests this week
@classicalsaxmom Serious senioritis here, too. S went to prom Saturday and came home at 3 pm on Sunday. Then went to youth orchestra rehearsal Sunday night, and took an AP exam Monday morning. He has another AP exam tomorrow, but he was on the piano most of the night “testing a theory.” There is a cute girl in the picture and friends who graduated last year trickling back home.
Two more weeks.
S’ last AP, English Lang, is today.
I’m elated my D is done with academics…forever!..at least on my dime. She just passed her orals. And yes looking down the barrel of the gun on how to support herself is daunting but thrilling at the same time. She can finally “do” as oppose to “study”. I love when the rubber meets the road…the fear makes you feel so alive! LOL.
She has 3 contracts that take her through next spring. She’ll be working on the next round this fall. I think it’s a tough lifestyle but it’s her life not mine. And yes, she will be poor. Poverty is such a great motivator!
Who knows in a year or so…but if she “fails” she’ll most likely end up with a stable job and benefits…that can’t be all bad, right!!! In my opinion it’s all up from here.
D last day of school was last Monday. She still has pending Senior Welfare, graduation and prom. On her music side, she has pending the San Juan Children’s Choir Senior graduation (twelve years at the choir) and the choir final year concert in June. I am so glad this very tough semester for all of us is over. Thank God we decided for Oberlin as things back home are pretty ugly. Puerto Rico started bankrupt proceedings this month and the state university students are at a major indefinite stoppage strike based on major budget cuts to the University of Puerto Rico. Scheduled graduating seniors from the university will not graduate and all other students including incoming freshmen might lose a year. In addition, over 170 public school throughout the island will close permanently. God help our kids.
