Are you able to transfer from a California Community College to a UC in one year with the IGETC?

I asked my counselor and he said no, but in the student handbook it says the IGETC lets you transfer without taking the upper division courses.

Also, I took classes in spring semester (specifically Intro to Philosophy, Screenwriting, and ENG-1A/English Composition) and it also says that it only counts if they were counted towards the IGETC when I registered for them. If I’m gonna try and transfer in one year, am I gonna have to do ENG-1A again, or can I?

Specifically I am trying to transfer from Riverside City College to University of California, Riverside.

You can only really do that if you have a lot of AP credits.

IGETC lets you enroll at any UC and not have to take any further general ed classes. These are all lower division classes. What “upper division courses” are you referring to?

You also seem to be confusing 2 concepts. IGETC has nothing to do with transferring in one year, or with transfer eligibility at all. You can complete the IGETC and not be eligible to transfer. In order to be eligible to transfer you need 60 semester units. To get there in one year will take either a lot of AP credit or dual-enrollment while in HS. A particular major may add on prerequisite classes you need. IGETC just means you have taken a pattern of general ed classes at your CC that the UCs will accept as satisfying their general ed requirement even if you have not taken a specific class (or classes) the UC requires for students attending all 4 years.

What I’ve learned is to use Assist.org which shows the required classes which you need for your major. I also thought that I could just transfer using the IGETC, but I found out certain majors like Biology requires extra classes [In my case sciences & mathematics] AP credits may cover the cost of the general classs. For Example If I were to pass the AP Biology it would only cover a General Biology class but not the classes needed for transfer.

It depends what your major is. There are some majors that have virtually no prereqs, so finishing IGETC + 60 units is enough. But for most majors, IGETC is just a part of your checklist. I think that you have IGETC confused with something else, like TAG. IGETC is nothing more than a certification for your GE. Some majors don’t require IGETC, or even advise against it.
