Wow, yea...I'm the only one from my school who even applied to Vandy

I'm from Atlanta, and yep, I'm def going to Vandy!
Its so nice to know there'll be desis there! haha...Atl is full of desis, so i'm kind of used to that.

Ooh, you're desi too? :)
Nice!
What's your sn? We should talk !

i sent you a private message w/ my sn :)

Is there any koreans accepted to vanderbilt and sure to go?
If there is anyone, please PM me

Just from the asian responses we're getting in this small forum community, it can't be that bad. I guess it's still lacking compared to other places but I know they're trying really hard to get more diversity. I went to MOSAIC and the people there said programs like those really work and Vandy is becoming much more diverse. It might be 6-7% asian now but i wouldn't be suprised if it goes up to ~8-10% by 2009.

Im a korean guy and i'm going. Turned in my money yesterday. Mark two up for korean froshes!

zip86,

Are you Korean American or Korean? I am just curious.

Which ever one that's better...jk
I know there's always a big gap between the "asian-asians" and the "american-asians."
I'm both. I can be asian asian and american asian. Doesn't matter to me. But since i've lived here (US) for 11 years, i'm more american asian than pure asian.

at vandy, the americanized-asians mostly hang out with white kids. the asian-asians mostly hang out with other asians

I'm more like 'asian-asian' since I only lived here 2 yrs. So when i look back my cultural background and beliefs, i think like asian.

Zip86 what are you going to major?
Are you in engineering? arts+science?

yhk49 and zip86,

My best friend at Vandy is a Korean who did three years of high schools here. He always complains to me about how there aren't enough Koreans at Vandy. If you need any information/help before you start school in Fall, I can put you in touch with him. Let me know.

I'm kind of undecided right now but as of now, i'm in economics (CAS) and CS (engineering) as minor/major, respectively.

I went to MOASIC and got to meet really cool koreans/asians. http://www.vanderbilt.edu/AASA/ There are vids and pics on the website. From the small sample of Vandy asians I saw when I visited, more of them were American Asians than asian asians.

how are we defining american asians vs. asian asians? as in internationals or people who still have a noticeable accent?

There is no set rule but most everyone knows the difference. There are a lot of social and cultural differences between AAsians and AAmericans. One measurement is whether you prefer speaking English or your native language.

BTW, I'm not trying to discriminate or divide these groups. I'm just saying there are two distinct groups, although we are all techinically asians.

Yeah we sometimes make a difference by the generation.
For immigrants who came here as a parent or an adult, we call them The 1st generation
For immigrants who came here between children to student(I am in this group) and have some knowledge of korean culture and language, they are called 1.5th generation.
For people who was born here and lived here, dont know much korean, is called 2nd generation.
Of course there is quite a distiction between these groups as 1st and 1.5th generation is less fluent compared to 2nd generation. But I have to say that 1.5th and 2nd generation gaps are considerably small.

BTW I am 1.5th generation and thus I prefer speaking Korean instead of English even though I can speak both.

I'm also 1.5 generation. Came to the US when I was 7 and continued to live in Korean life style. I can speak Korean and do to my parents but I have no Korean speaking friends so I don't use it very often. Hopefully that will change at Vandy cuz I need to keep using my korean before I forget it completely.

ic, aight then im an indian american. and in terms of social skills it seems that 1.5th to 2nd generation gaps are still fairly noticeable.

is there any chinese americans that's going to vanderbilt next fall?
btw, i think i belong to the 1.5 generation since i mostly listen to chinese music instead of american music.
well, this is my first time posting here, i hope i will get to meet some of you guys next fall.
