Ask a Current Howard Student

@908 and @whittiest

Yes! When I looked at my bison web and saw the financial aid screen i was like $42,000!?!?! Im looking for coupons and scholarships for all that money Lol

lol coupons??? hahaha

@ whittest and bhamp

how are they paying for it though, like current students? 42,000 is like, georgetown kinda numbers

@908 Scholarships, pell grants, and subsidized/unsubsidized loans. That’s about it. There is no magic formula or anything. Like I said everyone I know whose transferring or entering has a pretty high GPA or SAT score so ALOT of people are relying on Howard University Scholarships to get them through.

Has anyone looked into the Mordecai Wyatt scholarship? On the website it’s very unclear on how you receive it other than saying you need a recommendation from the dean and a personal statement. Sounds pretty easy…too easy…so I’m thinking there’s got to be something else…

does howard have a baseball team?and are they good? im trying to get a scholarship

What’s HU’s squad like these days? Is the coach still Deidra Morrison? I’ve seen plenty of vids on youtube =)

Just got my transfer scholarship in the mail it’s offical!!!

congrats…i still have about 6-7 months to get my letter of acceptance

When do scholarships usually exhaust for howard? I’m a junior in high school and I recently got my sat scores back and they’re pretty bad…under 1400 :frowning: I’m planning on taking my acts in june…I have a practice book of the acts and they’re wayyyyy easier and I have confidence that I’ll do a million times better…and I want to take the sats again in october, but I’m afraid of the curve…so I might want to take it after october, maybe even in january,…but I’m afraid that if I take it in january, they’ll be no scholarships left by the time I get my results…so my question is…when does howards school given scholarships exhaust?

I Applied to Howard Sept. 30 , 2011 and under application Data it says Decision Made . It also says current Program and campus (main) so does that mean I’m accepted?

Also do they offer student loans to undergraduate students without a cosigner?

hey guys im really needing some help i dnt know anyone that goes to howard so im on my own with this whole process i am a transfer student from austin peay state university/ tn state i want to recieve the transfer scholarship anyone who has recieved the scholarshipcan u please let me know what your GPA was and when did u apply and how long it took for a answer? also when is the best time to send in a deposit for housing?? thanks so much for any help

@cocotatum they should have the subsudized and unsubsidized loans well they do and those do not require a cosigner… will you be a freshman?

Can anybody who got the legacy scholarship wite their stats.

just look at the howard website on the legacy scholarship. it tells you the criteria. scholarships are first come first serve so as long as you applied early & fit the criteria your good.

applying to HU and possibly two other schools

I’m applying and have no idea what to write about. I have some already written essays that I could copy and paste there but I don’t want to, give them something that they just completely don’t want. I have says ranging from “why I choose my major” to “who inspires you” Could you guys give me an example of topics you chose?

I’m a freshman at Howard U so I’ve been through the application process. With Howard , they definitely care more about the actual person than a whole bunch of numbers. I mean of course they don’t want you if you have more than mediocre stats, but a 2.9/1480 with a strong essay may put you over the edge. In my essay, I wrote about a personal story – one about how the city I lived in wasn’t the most promising for young African-American males, how I plan to make it out with the help of an opportunity from Howard U, and how I overcame adversity and still prevailed in school.

Think about it like this: Howard receives hundreds perhaps thousands of applications per year; how many people do you think have the same gpa and test scores as you? What seperates you now? Since they don’t know you from any other application, try to differentiate yourself using your essay. My advice is to write about something that will emotionally appeal to the application committee lol.

Weird, I actually know what you mean but I have seen there us a bare minimum of getting in. I am another current student, kiddo and I actually stay in the same dorm. While howard values you as a person there is a definite cutoff of a minimum 1030 sat (math and reading) I believe that if you don’t get at least this you won’t be accepted.

Like he said about your personality I had a friend in high school that did not get accepted, but she called and they said if she got enough they would accept her. Just somethings to think about. Good luck guys, hope to see you guys in the fall!

Have you heard of any stories of people’s scholarships being given away? I recently was accepted to Howard with the capstone scholarship, but honestly, it’s my last choice. I’m waiting back to hear from Lafayette (I applied RD) and Union College (deferred to RD), but my family is concerned that if I don’t accept it before the deadline that they gave me (May 1st), they’ll award it to someone else. The admissions office is closed for the holidays, and I need to know if I still should finish writing these college essays for other schools or if I should take the offer because the money could possibly not be available.
