You have a language requirement for the school (area A) tht you have to complete by the end of your sophomore year. For the English major specifically They require either a 5th quarter of one language OR a 3rd quarter of one language and two lot classes taught in that language.

@Frankie51
I would definitely not recommend a single for your first year at ucsb. In most cases your roommates become your really good friends and you will meet a lot of people through them and with them. A single makes it a lot harder to get to know the people on your floor. Most roommates are okay with girlfriends staying over as long as you’re respectful about it and give fair warning.

I meant grad students not undergrads

So if I took 3 years of a language in high school, instead of only the required 2, will that cover my language requirement?

For the university yes but not for your major. You’ll have to take a language placement test to figure out what quarter you’d be put in. You’d have to take up to a fifth quartet from there or up to a third quarter and two foreign language lit classes

I in no way disagree that I’d be happier at UCSb fred11, but my dilemma is will i have an upper hand in having done my undergrad at davis rather than SB when applying to Dental?med schools? I asking in terms of school rep, bio program, internships, etc? I Know ill be Happier at Sb but idk if I’d put happiness in front of my education? But if they are basically the same then i am definately leaning towards Sb.

Actually i just read your answer more in depth, so Thanks fred11 and thanks iwantanswrers, my questions have pretty much been answered.
Pending my trip to SB in sping break it looks like ill be a gaucho!
One more Q though, why is san miguel considered the ghetto?

It’s a little older than the other res halls but there have been lots of improvements to it in the last few years. I have crashed there a few times and there’s nothing wrong with it it’s just not quite as nice as some of the other halls.

What is pre med like at UCSB? (:

what is the biology program like??

@babygirl97
The bio program is really good at ucsb but tough. You’re going to be working about a thousand times harder than you did in high school and a lot harder than some other majors. Just to give you an idea I take about 18 units per quarter which ends up being about 24 hours per week in class. I take about four classes and two labs every quarter and it’s a lot of work. I spend most of my time reading and doing homework an studying. I’m not trying to scare that’s just the life of a bio major. I still have time to hang out and work out and party just not as much as some other people. Now you don’t have to major in bio or any kind of science to be premed, that’s just a label you give yourself. You could be a premed poli sci major or premed Spanish major, but most people choose bio and similar majors to get priority when choosing classes which is really important. Your question I kinda general but I hope that answers it.

I made a thread to ask this but I’m not getting a response so I’ll post it here:

Hello,

This question is directed more toward people living alone and already going to UCSB but if anyone had good info please answer.

Anyway, I’m a transfer student that is probably going to be attending UCSB for the fall (I TAGed it). I started looking into the cost of living (I live in LA so I’m gonna have to move). It’s seems to be around 600-700/month to live off campus and 13,150 (at the cheapest) to live on campus. So my main question here is including food, internet and appliances, what is a better deal?

If my UCR finical aid letter is anything like my UCSB one I’ll get around 20K excluding loans and work study. I’m betting I’m gonna have to get a job (which sucks) to cover some of the costs.

UCSBs price break down is:

Tuition $12192
Student Services Fees $1403
Books And Supplies $1414
Health Care Allowance $1293
Room and Board $13150
Telephone/Cell Phone $303
Transportation $831
Personal Expenses $1448
Total $32034

I like to watch stuff fall. Is it socially acceptable to drop things out your dorm window?

swagandtag, how long before you got your financial aid package?

I got it a few weeks ago for UCR. It may change slightly once my parents actually submit taxes but should be around the same. It’s a nice chunk of change I hope UCSB gives me even more.

My first choice of dorm was Santa Catalina double at first but now I’m leaning to one of the Shorties and a triple room. Triple rooms are around $2,000 cheaper. How are the triple rooms in the Shorties? If I get a triple should I stay in ft? And how would you rank the three Shorties? What are the pros and cons of each one?

Does anybody know what happens if someone you sort of know signs up to dorm with you in their housing application (they put in your perm num on their app) but you don’t want to dorm with them so you don’t put their perm in your housing app.

Apparently I know someone who does hookah and other stuff. I sort of know who he is but not that well and somehow he convinced my friend and I to dorm with him. First off I planned to dorm with new people but was somehow persuaded due to him being actually pretty smart when he tries in academics. He said he would focus more on academics than parties and etc so i guess that’s what made me agree. After I asked my other buddies that sort of know who this guy is for different opinions and i finally caved in. I have this other friend that knows him and I’m like good friends with him and he overheard (the guy that convinced me to dorm with him) wants to drug my friend and I to get us high. (this is because we aren’t the type that will party or smoke and he wants to see how we would react).

How big is the international community at UCSB? Are there any European students?

Frankie51, They say on the UCSB site that the triples are only temp rooms and that you should expect to play for doubles. I myself plan on living in the student apartments (which is what I think your talking about) its pretty cheap (718/month) and food is only 900/year. I can spring for that.

I was wondering if it is difficult to get the classes I want.
I heard that over in Davis, engineering students are having to take classes that don’t pertain to their major like child development or such because the classes are so impacted. Is it like that in SB too?
Also I am wondering how difficult it is to transfer from the college of letters and science to the engineering school?
And lastly, are most people able to graduate within 4 years?

THANK YOU so much!!
