Ask a current UCSB student anything :)

The 600-700 dollars you would be spending most likely does not include utilities like garbage water gas Internet etc. and definitely does not include food. It’s really going to be about what matters more to you individually. I’m personally choosing to live in housing for continuing students next year for a few reasons. 1. The payment situation is really convenient. I don’t have to worry about rent checks or deposits I’ll never get back or the possibility that one of my roommates won’t make rent one month. 2. It’s really convenient. I’m going to be a second year bio major next year which is basically hell so it’s nice not to have to worry about making meals or buying groceries or other amenities. 3. It’s clean. Pretty much anything you get in IV is old and dirty. The halls are cleaned by maintenance staff and your room is cleaned every two weeks and always has been. There aren’t mold problems or anything like that. 4. It’s close to classes and IV. It’s the perfect distance so you’re not too far from campus but not far from IV either.
You have to keep in mind though that it is a couple hundred dollars more expensive per month, so if financial restrictions are the main factor in your decision that’s probably not your best option.

It’s definitely socially acceptable just watch out for staff and RAs.

I personally love my triple. That’s just an extra person you know right off the bat. I would recommend the shorties especially if:

  1. You don’t like biking a mile each way to classes everyday.
  2. You have early classes.
    There are triples in ft too, although they are bigger. Honestly though, I don’t mind the size of my room. Everything fits and everyone can move in and out so it’s never been an issue. In terms of the shorties I would list them in this order:
  3. Anacapa
    This is where I live. It’s the closest to the beah of the three and really close to classes. It’s really close to food although the others are slightly closer and it just has a really great sense of community.
  4. Santa Cruz
    This one is shaped exactly the same as Anacapa. It’s still fairly close to the beach but farther from classes. Still a good sense of community just not quite as much as Anacapa. Closer to food.
    Both Santa Cruz and Anacapa have halls that are big (about 130 people per floor) but not so big that you can’t meet everyone.
  5. Santa Rosa
    This hall is close to food and classes but not as close to the beach and there are no beach view rooms like you might get in the other two. It has a couple of quads (4 person rooms) which have balconies. It has it’s own gym too. The place is a maze though and a lot of my friends who live there got lost multiple times the first few weeks. Also, it’s kinda dead because each floor is so big it’s hard to connect with everyone. It’s also the oldest.
    You can’t really go wrong with the shorties.

Quick question;

I’m a Norwegian Transfer student hoping to get accepted to UCSB in the fall of 2013. This year I’ll be going to a community college OOS. I got bad grades in high school but grown and done a lot since then. Like a year in the Royal Norwegian Air Force. Will I have a chance even with low high school grades if I do well at community college this year, aswell as having a lot to show for outside of school?

And I’ve noticed that UCSB has what seem to look like an ok football (soccer) team. Do they have some sort of tryout? And, if possible, could you tell me what level college soccer is compared to european? (lower divisions).

That would be all. :)

@scambag
If its not mutual they won’t put you as roommates.

@ucsbgirl
I dont know too much about the international community here but there are not very many international students in the freshman halls. There is a house in manzanita for international students and a lot of them live in university owned apartments but not usually outside those two places. You’ll meet an international student occasionally in your classes though.

It used to be true that most triples turned into doubles but in the past couple of years there have been so many more students enrolling that the majority of triples stay triples throughout the year. No one in our hall has been forcibly detripled (detripled for reasons other than roommate or personal problems). Most likely if you get a triple you will have it the whole quarter unless you have a problem with a roommate (which isn’t very common in my experience) or put in a specific request with he housing department.

@ddawgie
I’m not in engineering and the cases I’ve seen are a bit unique because I live on the honors floor but no one I know has ever had too hard a time getting into engineering classes. If you’re not honors you might not get the professor you want or have to crash but most people end up in the classes they want/need.

Are the “large bathrooms” in San Miguel, San Nicolas, Santa Rosa, Anacapa, and Santa Cruz clean? What about the bathrooms in Manzanita and Santa Catalina. I know that in Santa Catalina, it really depends on your roommates, but what about Manzantina?

What’s the quietest dorm? I hear that the Anacapa and Santa Cruz are. I’d like some quite, but I don’t want to be disconnected from the rest of the community.

Also, is San Nic a nice dorm. If you do FSSP you get stuck there the whole year apparently.

i’ll try to keep it short:

  1. I like San Nicolas, but i wont be going to FSSP and im worried that people there will already know each other by the time i arrive in the fall. Thoughts on this?

2) Is using the bus (or a car) a viable option to get to campus from Santa Catalina? How often do the buses come and go and how hard is it to find parking spots? I never bothered to learn how to bike, so that might be problematic

@inorway
I know that our school team is really good in soccer but I have no idea what the levels are compared to Europe.

So could I pay 900 a school year and get 17 meals a week. Am I understanding that correctly because that’s awsome!

Also, what about the undergrad apartments? Do I have a chance of getting one? Are they nice? Do I have to worry about other people not paying rent?

Is it a good idea to do FSSP this summer? Pros vs. Cons?

Which hall has the best food?

Is weed smoked in the res halls or are they tough on that?

Are you allowed to have coffee makers in the dorms?

Which dorms are best for freshman? Pros and Cons?

Yes the bathrooms are clean. Bathrooms in every hall but ft are cleaned every morning. Manzanita included. Anacapa and Santa Cruz are definitely not the quietest dorms, but they’re also not the loudest. Ft is generally the worst with noise, manzanita is generally the quietest. The shorties are not extremely loud but still very social. San mig and San nic are slightly quieter and generally not as social but still friendly.

@maninwhite
They changed FSSP this year so that you’ll be moving in around all those who attended. I’m not 100% sure but it’s most likely that those people will be put on just a couple of floors (San nic has 8) and other residents will be on different floors with others who did not do FSSP.
Yes you can definitely bus to campus from ft. Buses technically come every 30 mins but there are 3 or 4 lines that will take you to campus so you’ll pretty much always be able to catch one. Driving is harder because usually only faculty spots are open or you have to buy a day pass. It generally results in lots of tickets.

@swagandtag
Yes that what they’re giving you. I’m not sure if it’s available to first years but they also have a plan with unlimited meals for a little more money so you can eat as often and as much as you want.

@swagandtag
Sorry I didn’t see the second part of your question. You are not eligible to live on the undergrad apartments until you’re a third year and even then theyre really hard to get. You’re guaranteed a spot if you live on campus for two years, then it’s up to a lottery. You get priority based on units, class standing, and whether or not you’re honors. They’re extremely in demand because it’s some of the heresy housing in IV and it’s a lot cleaner than most things you’ll find elsewhere.
