Ask an FSU student about freshman year

Parents and students are split soon after the initial meeting. Parents go to parent orientation and students to student orientation. It is a busy time for both.

I have the late orientation (Aug 18-20), so when I register for classes, am I going to get all of the classes I need, or just what’s left over? I’m kind of worried about this…

For first semester, there are so many thing you can take, that I don’t think it will be a big problem. It could mean an 8am class, but other than that, you will be fine. Research classes on www.registrar.fsu.edu. On the left click registration tools and course look up. Sometime you have to clear the search button twice.

Here is what you will need as gen ed and liberal studies requirements. https://cfprd.oti.fsu.edu/anr/CourseRequirementsView/index.cfm</a> They have not been changed recently so click on the latest year listed.

Thanks a lot!

yeah don’t worry about class selection, tbh your gen-ed is all you’re going to be working on the first year mainly. I’ve only taken 2 classes that are actually pre-reqs for my major and the rest are gen-ed. Plus there are so many classes that satisfy the requirements that its no huge issue when you register for your first semester

In regards to the females at FSU, I would say that we’re just like any other place in Florida. When it’s hot out, ladies lay out on the green. When it’s cold, everyone is layered and marshmallow looking. Smart chicks are hot too, so don’t avoid the honors students based on stereotype (there are some unfortunate looking students NOT in honors too…trust). The best advice I have as a graduating male to an incoming male, is to seek out women where YOU would normally hang out. If you don’t like clubs, don’t go to a club trying to find a girlfriend. If you want someone more intellectual, try your classes, study groups, or library. All women can be crazy (all men are crazy too, its a crazy world). And as for willingness…haha…it IS college so people are experimenting, but its not as sexually charged as movies make it seem. Women are respectable at FSU (for the most part) and they don’t just hand themselves over. So aim high, and find a nice lady. Go Noles!

Good statement jinx!

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Can someone tell me how bad parking is? I will be living on campus and I’m wondering if I should bring my car and leave it in the parking garage. This way, if I want to eat out somewhere or go to publix real quick I wouldn’t have to take the bus.

Parking is sacred. Bring the car though. Beyond the bonus of being able to bop around town for fun on the weekend… Hauling a bunch of groceries on the bus is hard. The campus buses don’t run on the weekend except for the Night Nole on Sat. Thagard stopped filling meds so you’ll likely have to walk/hitch a ride/catch a bus to CVS to get them filled which sucks when you are really sick (normally takes a couple hours to fill- they are busy). Are you going to need to see any doctors off campus? Planning to volunteer off campus? A car definitely isn’t a requirement… it’s just Really nice to have.

As for class selection… drop/add is a HUGE time to pick classes! Some people grab a spare class to compare profs/workload ect so those classes are dropped the first week. Quite a few students will drop a class once they attend the first day and get ahold of the syllabus (many profs aren’t even listed for our registration). So when a class is dropped another student picks it up who then drops their least favorite class to make room and so on and so forth. I usually end up swapping a class or two each semester. When drop/add starts and you really want to get rid of that 8am class then be really anal about watching the course search. Dropped classes don’t stay dropped for long.

Parking isn’t really that bad… just don’t move your car on weekdays during class times.

Park Avenue Garage is full Sunday Night through Friday afternoon.

Woodward Avenue Garage (by the bookstore) is full on weekdays only. You can easily find a spot on the third floor on weeknights.

which dorm is the closest one from the music building?? if not, then apt

also, how close is the gym and dining to the music building???

thanks!!!

To be honest, the campus isn’t THAT big so everything seemed fairly close to me while I was there.

cawthon is the dorm for the music living learning center. jennie murphree (girls dorm) is the closest, but not by much. reynolds, bryan, broward, gilchrist, and landis are all close too. basically, you either want an east side dorm or apartment. if u get west side (salley, kellum, smith) youre better off with an apartment. there are plenty of buses or if u have a car there is a free parking garage right by the college of music

Alright lads,

It pretty much seems that I’m going to be housed in Kellum.

Can anybody give me any sort of information on it? What to expect, anything I should know, etc?

Much appreciated

Kellum isn’t that bad to be completely honest. And its because everyone is friendly and you’re stuck there for a year, everyone gets over it.
Yes it’s not like living at home, but you’re there for 2 semesters and then you can move out.

It’s really not that bad in ANY of the dorms

When will courses show up on blackboard?

Have you registered for them? If so they show up on your “my schedule” app on secure apps and you can click for the books link on the my schedule link to get a list of books. The courses will slowly start to show up on blackboard only once you get close to the start of the semester, and the prof and/or the TA start to put them up. Sometimes they will not show up until 2-3 days before class starts. Sometimes, they show up before, but there is no active link yet.

If you have registered and they show up in the My Schedule App you are fine. Just wait. For fall, you won’t see anything in blackboard much before early/mid August.

Alright, yeah, i know about the whole schedule app, but I am transferring from USF where usually classes show up on blackboard with active links 2 weeks or so before classes start. I’ll just wait then.

I have orientation from June 1st-3rd. What should I bring? Bed sheets, comforter, etc?
