Post anything in here that you want to know about what to expect your freshman year!

Please try and stay away from asking statistics (ask p2n or sunny about that!), but anything you want to know about your freshman year I'll try to answer to the fullest.

Best suite style dorms? Best community dorms? What is the best meal plan to choose, should I choose to live in a dorm that requires one, and why? Can you take food from the dining halls to your dorms? What kinds of things are there to do in the surrounding areas around FSU? How is the campus gym and intramural sports? Thank you for letting us ask you these questions! :)

@torioreo: I live in Degraff, It’s really nice, I love the proximity to the union, after that I’d say renyolds, then wildwood. Yes Wildwood is newer, but its far from pretty much everything besides the gym and diner. Best community dorms? I’ve heard the best stuff about dorman, supposedly its really social and not that terrible, I know smith is the worst (from what I’ve heard). Best Meal plan? I use the minimum amount of X meals per week one, I don’t know if it makes the most financial sense, but I use every meal without needing more, and I get enough flex bucks per semester. That part is really up to you, the food gets repetitive but its much easier to just go and eat their food (especially for breakfast) than having to walk to your kitchen (there is one on every floor I believe, at least in degraff I know there is), its really useful during finals, and yes you can bring the food back to your dorm, they give you a carryout tray. The surrounding area has tons of stuff to do, there are 4 movie theaters in town, 2 mainstream (AMC 20 and Regal 12), 1 Discount theater (movies 8) and one arthouse (miracle 5) in addition to the SLC movie theater on campus. There are 2 malls (though Tallahassee mall is nearly deserted now), plenty of places to go just hang out (Lake Ella). The leach center (campus gym) is amazing, very busy though around 5-7, go mid-day and its awesome. If you decide to go elsewhere there are plenty of gyms in tallahasse. Intramurals are easy to get into, just sign up if you have a team or theres a facebook group for any free agents.

@Dnerd: My roommate and I were random so it was a little bit of adjusting, I’d say we are both really comfortable, so we didn’t mind changing in the same room, though ive seen it where people go to the bathroom to change, its fine either way. You will figure out with your own roommate how its going to be. We also both had pretty good sleep schedules. I never really had any issues with using the bathroom, only 4 of us share one, and usually we don’t all need to use it at the same time. If that happens, there is a bathroom on the first floor (toilet and sink only) that I could use. Honestly you adjust, and while the dorms are one room, there are plenty of study areas on campus or areas you can get away to if you need your space.

@Sohini100 you might want to ask the admissions department about that, I didn’t have any issue as i’m on scholarship, sorry that I couldn’t answer your question.

What about the Honors Program? I’m trying to petition to get in, I have all 3 requirements to petition (you need 2 to petition). Do you know what the success rate of petitioning is? Thanks!

What are the girls like there? I mean in terms of craziness, attractiveness, and willingness to… you know. Are the girls in Honors usually unattractive? Are the people in Honors usually full of themselves (cocky) or clique-ish?

oh get over yourself. I don’t see how that can be disgusting if you haven’t even heard the answer yet. I could understand you saying something along those lines if he said most of them gave it up easily (like a girl in CARE told me they had a bad reputation for), but he didn’t even say anything yet, so you apparently find the question itself disgusting. I just wanted to get a feel of the overall sluttiness or lack thereof since I know a lot of ugly UF girls just give it up to fraternity members (heard this from a UF student herself).

Get over myself? Hmm, someone looking for some sluts telling ME to get over myself? How about you stop being a jerk and trying to bang as many girls as you can find, and instead put some time into getting to know them?

^ Umm… that’s a bit harsh considering the fact that you don’t even know his stance on it. If he’s telling the truth then he was just trying to see how it was compared to what someone else said and what he experienced at UF. I don’t think you can infer that he is looking for sluttiness if he’s just asking how bad it is.

I know this is a silly question, but how difficult is it to deal with the Florida heat? I know that most people are in-state and therefore used to it, but how about people coming from cold climates? I’ve lived in NJ my entire live and attend school in an extremely cold area of CT. After four months (and more to come) of freezing weather and weekly snow storms, I’m looking at colleges farther south, but I don’t know how easy it would be for me to adjust to always being hot.

reginaphalange–most likely you’ll be home in the summers when it is the hottest. But I do know a friend’s daughter said afternoon football games in Oct. can be really hot in the stadium. Tallahassee won’t be like Miami or even Tampa–it’s further north. As a transplant from NY, I’d rather deal with the heat than the snow. All the buildings will be air conditioned. I used to find it more unbearable back in my hometown in upstate NY in the summer because the house didn’t have air conditioning. Most people that come from places like yours love the weather. Besides, where else can students be thrown in fountains in the middle of winter (a tradition at FSU on one’s birthday) without worry of hypothermia?

Thought I’d just jump in for a few questions too.
I really love Gilchrist as a suite-style dorm. It’s right off landis green (and therefore is only a couple minutes from the union), close to many classes (as well as Strozier library), and has quick access to Suwannee. I found that Wildwood and Degraff’s walls are on the thin side (noise.) But since they are new they are very clean. I also find the ‘rape tunnel’ to be a little creepy though you could always rely on the safe bus. The downside for dorms off Landis green is that you’ll need to rely on the parking garages.

Many students, if they don’t have an apartment-style dorm, will want some kind of meal plan to give them at least one buffet style meal a day. I found it’s easy to use the kitchen down the hall. The real problem lies in that you have to store your stuff to cook! Remember that the mini-fridge is quite small and the smaller the room the less space you have to store food/pots/utensils/ect. It’s also a major pain to clean-up.

In Gilchrist (as far as I know) every floor there is a half-bath with a full bath every couple floors. They were mainly used by people who were accidentally locked-out by their suitemates in the morning. You’ll easily fall into a routine with your roommates and suitemates when it comes to showering. Being a late-night type of person I often used the study room on our floor.

Don’t forget you can get into the Honors Program laterally (which is what I did) by getting a certain GPA the Fall semester of your freshman year.

Landis is REALLY nice, everyone who can live there should, my friend has a triple in landis and its so big I can do a cartwheel in it. There is only one gym on campus, but its pretty big.

I don’t know the rate for petitions, but if you have a high enough GPA at the end of your first semester you can go honors, if you don’t get in via petition then get in with good grades, your honors priority for registration doesn’t start until registering for spring classes anyway.

I’m going to answer your question honestly, the girls here are incredibly attractive and fun to hang out with, yes there are lots of girls who have a little too much to drink and become a little more promiscuous, but all in all, its college, these things happen. Though there are very attractive women on campus.

The heat is pretty bad during summer sessions, though during the fall it will be bearable by august, it does get hot though, as tallahassee is more landlocked, it doesn’t have the nice ocean breeze that keeps the heat down and keeps it warm during the winter. I wouldn’t throw anyone in the fountain in winter, it does dip below freezing pretty often during the winter. It won’t always be hot though, october it starts cooling down again.

Oh ok. So… is the drinking/drug (yes I count mary jane) scene that bad? I was blown away when I visited another school and saw an open stash lying out in the open as soon as a guy showed me his dorm.

Offering my two cents as well.
the truth is, even though Landis is the honors dorm, there is a good part of the population that likes to party. Two of my future roommates for this coming fall live in landis now, they are awesome, and also love to go out and party.

Also, I’d say wherever there is a college town, there’s going to be a pretty rampant drug/alchy scene. It varies where you go, on campus, I’ve been to several dorms where people store bottles in their freezer, and pull it out pregame (yes, even landis.). I know most of the people who live in the wellness living dorm (Reynolds) smoke/drink.
If you go to the strip or clubs/bars around town of course drinking is going to be huge.

I’ve met a ton of people from south florida who didn’t really drink that much, then they came here to fsu and (being a lady, it’s too easy to get alcohol in Tallahassee) suddenly they are into partying hardcore and binge drinking because it’s difficult to avoid. Being away from home with newly found freedom, it’s natural to go out to parties and clubs and stuff and learn about your town.

If you’re not into that, don’t participate. Be prepared for a ton of peer pressure, but, alot of people have to understand that this isnt high school anymore, you are responsible for your own actions and how you choose to spend your time.

Besides, freshman year is the time where your allowed to go out and do dumb things, just learn from your BAD experiences :)
