Hi! I'm a CC student looking to transfer to Cal (I'd be starting Fall 2012) under the PACS major. It says on Assist that I need to complete 2 classes from the list (which I will have done by the end of the Spring term). But would completing all of the classes on the list give me a better chance of getting in, or does it not matter? There's no way I can finish all of them before I transfer, but I might be able to finish 70-80%.

If it doesn't really hold weight in my application, I'd prefer not making the Assist stuff a priority (so much extra stress!). Does anyone know if the non-required stuff matters?

The more you complete, the better chance you have of getting admitted. Period. You must complete those classes eventually, so I would recommend that you make them a priority while you’re still at your CC.

What “non-required” stuff are you referring to in your last question?

Edit: I took a look at the PACS pre-reqs on ASSIST. Most of those would count towards IGETC, so you can count classes for both.

They want you to finish as much as possible, I think they want at least 2 before you transfer. They know that there is no way in hell you would be able to get all that done. I would say to take major prep classes that are also on the IGETC, which a lot of them probably are. I would also say to make your major prep classes your priority, that’s what schools care about more than anything.

By “non-required” I mean the classes on the list outside of the two required (if that makes sense.) So, the amount of classes I take DOES weigh in my final application then?

Are you trying to say that if you focus on the major prep that you won’t complete the IGETC or do you just not want to overload yourself with work?

Sorry, I’m a little confused now. Do admission officers look at the number of classes I take from the Assist list, outside of the required two (regardless of whether or not they’re part of IGETC)?

@ReachTheEnd, I don’t think I’ll have any trouble completing IGETC, but I don’t want to have to worry about dealing with the Assist stuff and taking on too much work.

So if you want to transfer to UCB PACS, the best you can do at a community college is to take at least two courses that articulate to the named courses (based on what assist.org says) and fulfill the foreign language requirement. It certainly won’t hurt to complete more than two courses that articulate to courses in the above list.

The UCB PACS major has 9 upper division courses; with PACS 10, that will make 10 courses you will need to take for the major after transferring (if you take normal course loads of around 15 units for four semesters, you will likely take around 16-20 courses, as most courses are 3 or 4 units each).

You have two required classes for PACS. As long as you complete them, it doesn’t matter beyond that.* But it certainly won’t hurt.

In addition, your two PACS lower div classes can certainly count towards IGETC. If you plan it correctly, you could end up taking only 11 or 12 classes for IGETC and electives to meet the 60 unit requirement.

If no post here has addressed it, where is the problem?

*Caveat: There’s an essay where you describe your experience and passion in your major. I believe demonstrating interest by taking extra classes helps in this area.

It’s the same exact thing for UCI’s English. There are like 15 literature courses and Assist says you should do atleast two of them. if I were to do all of them, I’d probably have to take another two or three years at ccc.

So,Just do as many as you can. the more, the better.

Try to find a major that you have the most requirements completed from. That’s what a Berkeley admission rep told me. Maybe something similar to PAC.
