Hi, I'm a grad student joining this fall, and I've been looking around at housing options considering the Graduate Living Center has already filled up. The 3 bedroom Atlantic Station Flats look like a decent option. Does anyone here live there or know someone there who can give me an idea of how it's like for a student to live there?

Also, it seems like crime is a really big issue for GA Tech students, especially around the university itself. I've heard good and bad stories about pretty much every place around campus, Midtown, Atlantic Station, etc. How much of an issue is it really? I'm from Berkeley, which isn't anywhere near the size of Atlanta, but is next to Oakland. There are break-ins to the the dorms and housing a few times a year or so, maybe a mugging or two every year, but I've never felt unsafe walking around campus or in the neighboring area at night. The advice I keep hearing about Atlanta is lock your doors and don't venture out at night. Are things really much worse here?

Merper68, we live about 30 miles north of Atlantic Station, but I work downtown and pass by daily, and stop in the vicinity on a weekly basis. It is like everywhere else, safety measures are of great importance. There have been 2 random shootings there within the last 6 months or so, and the way the media told it, there was nothing the victims had done wrong, overlooked or been careless about, just thugs, one was a home invasion and one I guess was just a guy getting out of his car and was shot. That being said, it Atlantic Station is a great place, has everything you need there from grocery stores, drug stores, health care facilities, entertainment, dining, shopping, etc. If I were your age, it would be somewhere I would live, crime is everywhere! From what I have seen, there is security and police there at all times. Have you been there and checked it out? One last thought however, it is an area, if you go a couple of blocks in the wrong direction, could be a bad scene!

oh, and i would not walk around at night!

That sounds great except for the, uh, random shootings... O_O

I have been to Tech for a visit weekend but, of course, they gave me the rosy version of the city. If I saw the area, then I passed by too quickly to really catch any details.

Are daytime hours pretty safe? I expect that I'll stuck many nights in whatever lab I join, so I can just crash there if it gets too late. I guess it's one way to motivate students to work long hours!

My son and his girlfriend are students at Georgia Tech. They go to Atlantic Station practically every weekend for shopping and dining. Neither has a car, so they walk there both during the day and in the evening. I hope they are staying alert for trouble, but so far they have not had any problems.

Very useful info. Thank you both for that. It looks like my best living options as a non-commuter are here or at the North Ave on-campus housing. Grad students who don't get into the designated graduate housing are put in with the undergrads it seems. Do either of you or anyone else from GA Tech have any thoughts on the North Ave apartments? Is it noisy like the standard dorms or does it have a true apartment type feel to it?

No idea, since these apartments will open for Georgia Tech for the first time this fall. They were part of Georgia State in the past, but they are designed much like the west campus apartments, so any info on those should apply here.
