Umm, i dunno. I was absent a lot in my senior year for various trips (to visit colleges, and some school related....but in total I was absent 1/4 of my senior year). It didn't say on my tanscript what the absenses were for and I didn't explain it on my application (I actually don't know if final transcripts even have absenses on them...I think only report cards do but transcripts shouldn't...) I got into everywhere I applied (except Stanford...but i was waitlisited) so i wouldn't worry too much. Honestly, as long as your grades are good it shouldn't matter. If it was a lot of time though and you feel you need to address it, do. Don't write your essay about it (unless the absenses were for something REALLY significant like a death of a family member or illness etc. don't go on for pages describing how you were absent one day because you had the flu, one day because your grandma was visiting, etc...) if u want to explain it then id explain it on the spot that say "is there anything else you wish to tell to us". Good luck!

In general, I don't think attendance is on high school transcripts. The only people who might mention it are your teachers. If you pick teachers that understand your reasons for being absent (and who don't mention it on their evaluations), nobody should be able to find out.

If they do find out, it may or may not hurt you. It could depend on who is reading your file and how he/she feels about the issue.
